What has gone wrong with Barclaycard?

I have been a loyal Barclaycard holder for 11 years now (it was my first credit card when I was at uni). I have never paid any interest on the card.

There used to be great benefits such as the free extended warranty, purchase cover and price promise, together with Profile/Nectar points. However all of these benefits have been scrapped (Nectar points from Aug 31).

I read an article at the time regarding the end of the extended warranty etc which said that because of changes to FSA regulations, it would become too expensive for card companies to provide such free services. However most companies still provide purchase cover, Nationwide offer extended warranty, and Citibank offer a Price Promise (and now HSBC on their debit cards).

I'm also fed up with Barclaycard constantly trying to sell me things like payment protection over the phone. They even try it when you have to phone up and activate a new card.

I just do not see the point in having a Barclaycard anymore. Anyone else feel the same?

The world has changed a hell of a lot over the last 11 years. Then Barclaycard was king, but other card companies have come in and ofered better deals.
As for the phone calls re protection are you registered with Telephone Preference Service? If so go online and complain and if they persist they could be fined up to £5000.
If its you ringing them for any reason tell them straight at the begining of the conversation that you do not want to be sold anything.
Have a look around this site and apply for a card that better suits your needs.
I for one do not live near a Sainsburys so Nectar points are no good to me so I have an Egg Blue card which pays me .5% cashback. This has replaced my old Alliance and Leicester card after they stopped cashback.

I think that Barclaycard is far from the best card around at the moment. The only reason I stay with them, is that their enormous interest rate prevents me from wanting to use it for anything but an emergency. i.e Protection from myself! :rotfl:
Organisation and planning are for those who can't handle stress and caffine

A lot of people will be ditching Barclaycard soon as the 0% offer runs out next month (the one which started back in August 2004 that people complained about due to small credit limits).

I'll be one of them - and agree with you, there is no reason to stay with them any more.

I'm another long term Barclaycard user (since 1993) ... but early this year when they started scrapping the benefits, I shifted across to Citibank. I have to say that it hasnt been an easy ride with Citibanks service, but my Conran card arrived yesterday so I'll be on the phone to Barclaycard first thing Monday telling them to go jump!!! The only thing I will miss is the same day payment as I am a Barclays account holder ... but thats no biggie!!

Same day payment was actually in their favour anyway!

It's quite unfortunate that such benefits have been or are going to be withdrawn. Though they have the best online credit card access I've seen.

Well I cancelled my card yesterday when I had the pathetic offer of a 0% BT for 3 months and a 2% charge for doing it.
  • My Barclaycard's 9 month 0% runs out this month so they'll be receiving payment in full to clear the card. Can anyone with a good head for figures tell me what 9 months gross interest at 4.75% on £5K amounts to? I'll drink a little toast to Barclaycard... but I won't be staying with them.
...and then the window licker said to me...

Does anyone know if Barclaycard are about to offer any more decent deals or is this really it from them?

Existing customers can get a 6.9% balance transfer, nothing better than that?
