The edimax USB Print server is that price0

Take a look here: http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php
Any of the top ten listed are worth a shot. Personally I would try Slax or PCLinuxOS.

Red Rose Exile, those are network protocols. I'm talking about printer languages. The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

I appreciate that, but you actually asked if it supported any other printer, GDI is just a Windows Interface, to render pages as bitmaps so there's no need for expensive processors or large amounts of on-board RAM
Anyway, have a read of the manual
It should clear things up a little0 -

I'm no Linux expert, but having looked around for a good linux distro for my ancient (733MHz PIII) computers, I found Zenwalk linux (based on Slackware) runs very quickly. You can download a live CD to try it out, a "core" CD with just a bash shell (no X-Windows), or the full version. It's not bloated with software you won't use, has a clean feel to it, and you can easily install any software you might want - much better than Ubuntu et al, in my humble opinion!

don't use ubuntu it's set up to be as easy as possible but that doesn't mean it's configured to be as well configured as something that you do for yourself from scratch.
Have a look at gentoo - v configurable or sme server (based on centos) which is a stand alone server install that will work as a gateway, web server, firewall, do webmail etc as well.0
