I've found the receipt - I paid £175.50 at Asda August last year. I could have spent more by getting super thin lenses but they are not the cheapest either.

Shrimpergarry - I'm 53 so I'm doing quite well as these were my first pair of varis.

Edit - just remembered my DD works at Asda so I got 10% discount so total was about £195 - sorry but I think they were still v good value, they also came with magnetic clip-on sunglasses though I haven't worn them yet.

  • My wife thinks she's up for varifocals next time having just passed her 40th birthday so I'm interested at what age people are first being prescribed them.

Hi, I'm an optician, and most people need a different prescription for close work than they do for distance by their mid 40's. With some (especially certain ethnic groups) it can be earlier, and some people can be well into their 50's before noticing any probs with their near vision.

Your wife will start to notice that she has to hold close work further away, and get better light on it. Eventually she will feel that her arms are too short as she can't get the print far enough away, and she will need reading glasses/varifocals :)
If she is short-sighted and wears glasses for distance vision, it will eventually be easier to read if she takes off her glasses for close work.

There is a limit to the depth of frames you can fit a varifocal into, but you certainly don't need "granny-style" ones any more. There are many modern "compact" varifocal designs which will fit into shallower frames. I would definitely go elsewhere to get better advice.

For another poster, you can put varifocals(or bifocals) into a rimless frame, so it was probably something else that makes your prescription unsuitable for rimless.

Well just as an update, I tried the varifocals, couldn't stand them and ended up having them changed for one pair for distance and one pair for reading! lol
