Frames For Varifocal Prescription

I have been wearing varifocals for a few years and I have always had narrow frames. I go to Specsavers and have been told that it is not possible to have frameless varifocals. The ones that I am wearing at the moment just have frames along the top. I tried various designer frames but these were Specsavers own and they look really smart and above all they are light.

Do you need to switch between distance and near vision quickly?
If not, you could have two pairs, including your fashionable frames.Been away for a while.0 -
My optician also told me I couldn't have the very narrow frames for varifocals.
Still didn't have to have granny style ones, though, just a little more more curved.
And I have had frame-less varifocals, again the slightly more oval shape.
Anyhow, still better than having to put on/off reading glasses every few minutes or wearing bi-focals.0 -
If I end up having to pay around £300 then I might just have two pairs! lol

You would find having two pairs, one for distance and one for near to be an absolute pain. Even if you can manage to read a bit without glasses, when your distance sight is corrected by glasses you will not be able to read at all. Going round the supermarket becomes a nightmare of swopping glasses.
Get the varifocals. Shop around a bit more and I am certain you will find a frame you like at a better price. Even in my small town there are two independent optometrists and well as the all conquering SpecSavers.0 -
I have frameless Varifocals - and they have the reactolite lenses too? Oh well, as long as we are all happy with what we have got!I have been wearing varifocals for a few years and I have always had narrow frames. Mind you, they were a horrendous price - but as I wear them all the time, I thought it was a good investment.:j Almost 2 stones gone! :j

I got my first pair of varifocals last year, they are frameless cost £180ish from Asda opticians. I've had no problems with them.0

Hi Sally
If you get all the reference numbers off the frame in Vision Express, you may be able to find them much cheaper online and then get the lenses put in elsewhere.
Varifocals are much better dispensed by an optician rather than taking your chances online - especially if they're your first pair. I can recommend a very cheap (and good) optician in Basildon, Essex who will do this work (my wife got single vision lenses put into a frame she bought off eBay for only £28 there).
How strong is your prescription and, if it's not a rude question to ask a lady, how old are you? My wife thinks she's up for varifocals next time having just passed her 40th birthday so I'm interested at what age people are first being prescribed them.0 -

Hmmm, think I aged prematurely, have had varifocals since my mid 30's
