I have never seen any of my relatives in mainland Greece, or even anyone in any of the islands I have visited smash a plate at a party so I'm not sure where that comes from. Anyone else know? Maybe I have been to the wrong parties?
Probably! They used to smash plates in live concert venues (mpouzoukia) but it was made illegal after injuries of party goers or employees (singers, musicians or venue staff) They have long been replaced by gardenia flower buds throwing. 5 in a plate or so and they cost a fortune, too! Is there a trend with everything Greek costing a fortune nowadays? However, I can confirm that I have been to a wedding party of a close relative during which plates were smashed. I got to smash some too! FUN!:j My aunt and mother of the bride made sure to give us all the chipped ones and stopped us when were got carried away trying to smash everything smashable!
I get my Mum and Dad to bring us stuff back from Athens when they visit my Granny. My (English) Mum gets a few funny looks at security when they check her luggage full of Kalamata olives, loukoumi (GREEK delight), really fragrant dried oregano and some long life fruit or chocolate filled mini croissants from the (French) Carrefour down the road from my Granny's flat, that my (English) husband took a fancy to!
Rest assured she's not the only one to get funny looks! All Greeks leaving from Greece carry some foodstuff.ALL of them.;)

There is a very good food/delicatessen store in Moseley, Birmingham called Nimah's. I think it is Iranian, but has a very good and extensive range, including Greek, and worth a look.0

Many supermarkets are starting to stock a few bits, although mostly tinned.
Depending on your exact location you may find that you have a Macro near you that has recently been selling Mythos, Aldi occassionally have greek weeks, you may also find that there are alot of places that import food stuffs although very expensive.
Personally I prefer to fly there and bring my own bits back!
I can recommend a good website that may be able to give you further ideas and recipies should you be interested!0 -
Hia! I too live in the W.Mids. Lidl often have authentic food weeks where they stock unusual foods for cheap prices. I have seen them have Greek weeks a few times including tzatziki etc, so keep you eye out.
