Authentic Greek foods, where to get them??

Options
Does anyone know of any websites or stores (in the West Midlands) where I could buy Greek groceries from? Lots of supermarkets tend to have some 'ethnic' foods but very little Greek stuff (mostly Cypriot if anything).

Cheers

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately there's very little actual Greek stuff in Tesco (most of it is Cypriot). What I'm after are a few 'treats' for my missus to remind her of home such as Greek chocolates (e.g. Lacta) and other unique stuff.

Lidl have some stuff that says 'Greek xxx' but often it's just generic stuff made in Germany, I really want to get her some nice 'branded' foods.

Really appreciate you taking time to let me know though, cheers

Our local Lidl has a range of Greek food, mostly in tins, can't comment on its quality though.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Thanks! Although my OH loves Turkish food, I really want to see if there are any enterprising Greeks out there who are importing real Greek brands!

I looked at both those websites and, whilst they had a few things, they didn't seem to have a great deal of decent quality stuff, mainly tins of beans etc.

We can make all the homecooked stuff no problems as ingredients aren't a major problem (apart from goat and rabbit!) it's just the unique little things like the cake mixes (tons of really cool flavours that you don't get here) and stuff like the mastic chewing gum, lacta chocolate and the 'chips' that'd be really nice to get hold of.

Seeing as easyjet have started flying to Crete from Manchester, maybe I should start importing myself!!

Thanks for trying everyone, it's much appreciated!

PS If anyone likes Mythos, you might be interested to know that UK brewer Scottish Courage have a fairly big share in the Greek brewer and may start selling it over here (if demand is high enough)!
  • My Big Fat Greek Shop on ebay but can I just say it hardly seems worth it. It's too expensive! Especially when you know how much these items really cost. But I guess, if you're really desperate then it's the only solution! I rarely buy Caprice wafers from Waitrose because they cost a fortune! Maybe that's a good thing!
All Greek to Me Shop again on ebay. SO expensive!

Couldn't find any other places to be honest...

  • I'm a "little bit Greeky" too  and the Greek specialities in my local Lidl only seemed to be there for a short time before Christmas, sesame & honey bars, meze in tins, halva and little honey biscuits. But maybe they will be back soon. Lidl do a bi-weekly newsletter that you can sign up to and they let you know what will be on special offer in your local store a week early - http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.service.nl.sub.index

I found a fab ebay shop a while ago: mysamos2005 runs "My Big Fat Greek Shop" and he sends lovely things all the way from Samos island. He does Greek coffee, biscuits, dried herb teas, herbs and spices, "LACTA" CHOCOLATE! and other lovely gifts like "evil eye" key rings and ecclesiastical inscense crystals.

I have lived in Bath for 40 odd years and Greek food has always seemed scarce around the West Country. There are more Polish deli's here now than one's selling even Greek olives, although the Tesco in Wells was good for Greek snacks a few months ago! The shop in Weymouth is great too. They had loads of Greek wine and beer:beer: when we visited a couple of years ago, and specialities like "submarine" and fruit and honey "spoon sweets". It was run by a Greek husband and English wife who also had a hotel in Weymouth where I believe they had special Greek theme evenings - probably lots of plate smashing for the visitors.

I have never seen any of my relatives in mainland Greece, or even anyone in any of the islands I have visited smash a plate at a party so I'm not sure where that comes from. Anyone else know? Maybe I have been to the wrong parties?

I get my Mum and Dad to bring us stuff back from Athens when they visit my Granny. My (English) Mum gets a few funny looks at security when they check her luggage full of Kalamata olives, loukoumi (GREEK delight), really fragrant dried oregano and some long life fruit or chocolate filled mini croissants from the (French) Carrefour down the road from my Granny's flat, that my (English) husband took a fancy to!

All this has just reminded me that amongst the most recent food parcel was a box of chocolate cherries: real cherries on their stalks surrounded by cherry liqueur, covered in dark chocolate. Apparently they are only made in the cooler weather, so don't bother trying to ask any friends to bring them back from their Summer holidays! We had tried to hide them from the children. I wonder if my husband has got to them first ...?
