Can i move in

Hello

My girlfriend lives in a council house with her mum. Question: Can i move in and pay rent to her mum, or would the council kick up a fuss?

Thanks

  • as long as it doesnt create overcrowding, the council wont be too fussed, though often the tenancy agreement will say you should notify the local housing office that this is occuring and usually they do not refuse it unless there is a good reason or overcrowding

The only issue i see though if the rent is paid via housing benefit and your working that may mean the entitlement will be stopped or reduced, but Im not totlaly sure on that.

If your really concerned, get your gf's mum to look in her tenancy agreement to see what it says regarding people moving in who werent there when the tenancy began.

I dont think she gets hpusing benefit;s as she works herself... She pays £400 a month rent.. Im moving in the next month.. I should think if they see on the [SIZE=-1]electoral register that i have been added, they would contact us!

    Thanks for your help.

  • Should not be a problem - as my girlfriend moved in with me about 6yrs ago before we got our own place.

Bear in mind that any discounts (council tax, housing benefit, child benefit etc) that your GFs mother may be entitled to could be affected, Also, make sure that you have a written agreement in place in case you fall out with her mother, as it could affect your relationship with your GF.

I think the written agreement means she will give u a few weeks to move out if you and gf mum fall out, as opposed to being thrown into the street so to speak. its not a requirement to have one by any means!

if a council house is rented they provide the buildings insurance in with the rent, but the tenants are respoinsible for the contents

basically as long as someone is paying the full rent, with no benefits involved, the council will not care unless there's issues of health, safety or nuisance to neighbours.
    It's a health benefit ...
