the island has lots to offer for all tastes

magaluff - lots of brits drinking too much and not being able to handle it, lots of brit bars and cafes serving full english breakfast - big nightclub a la ibiza stylee but not really in the same league - it gets some of the radio 1 djs but that's it really

Palma nova - just down the road from magaluf - really has smartened itself up over the last few years, still has a few of the magaluf crowd but not many

allcudia - this is in the north of the island, it's a large resort that has a lot to offer for everyone but it is mainly a family based area

there are many places on the island to stay, I think you are probably best going around the palma nova area or if you want a bit posher then they portal nous - again, it's only down the road from palma nova - if you are this side of the island you can get into palma city easily

    food is excellent in mallorca

def don't want to be at the club end of the island - Alcudia sounds the better!

whats it like price wise over there? UK prices? More? Less?

    thanks Again

I've been to a few resorts. I wasn't so keen on Alcudia. It was a bit too touristy for me, but the beach is fantastic. Alcudia old town is lovely though.

I didn't like Calas de Mallorca. That's just a purpose built tourist resort and not Spanish at all.

Cala D'Or is my favourite resort. The beaches are all small sandy coves and there is a lovely marina. There are restaurants on the edge of the marina so you can sit and drool over the yachts - these are mega money yachts! The main resort centre is pedestrianised with a good variety of restaurants covering lots of different tastes. There are a few bars, but no noisy nightclubs. There are some nice shops selling decent things, and not many "tourist tat" shops. The resort attracts families and couples who are looking for a quiet relaxing time, rather than a non-stop party type resort. We didn't see any 18-30, single sex groups etc., when we were there.
Here I go again on my own....
  • My choices would be Puerto Pollensa, Deia or Soller. The latter two are well off the main tourist track. Puerto Pollensa has been increasing in popularity, but still one of the less touristy resorts.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • Another vote for Puerto Pollensa. It's a really beautiful resort, no high rise building at all. lovely beaches and a proper little town, with a town square, its own market, a marina and lovely promenade. At one end of the resort, this is pedestrianised and is known as the Pine Walk. As the name implies, there are pine trees and pretty little beaches, with a backdrop of mountains. Take your camera!

The restaurants are excellent here too. There are a lot more traditional Spanish eateries than you often get in resorts, they are not too expensive and wonderful food.

As for sightseeing, there is the old town of Pollensa itself, only a few minutes drive away inland, which is worth a look, and you can easily get to Alcudia (which also has a pretty old town). Slightly further afield are Soller, a pretty seaside town that you can get down to by old wooden tram; Deia, a pretty mountain village where the likes of Lloyd Webber have their villas and where there are some of the best (but rather pricey) restaurants on the island; the monastery at Lluc (in the mountains) and of course Palma, the island's capital, which is great for shopping, eating and another pretty walled old town & cathedral.

Puerto Pollensa is about an hour from the airport.

There are lots of other good resorts, but those on the north & east coasts are the prettiest, with the ones closest to the airport being the most "touristy".

Oh, I want to go back now!
  • Puerto Pollensa would be my recommendation for you having been to quite a few resorts on the island.
Whilst Deia and Soller are beautiful places they would not be most peoples idea of a holiday destination.
If you have a car do try and go to Palma for the day it is a lovely little city.

    Sean
  • Yep, Porta Pollensa is super for a quiet family or couples holiday.
Palma is great for a three or four day city break.

There is a historic electric railway from Palma to Soller, which is quite pretty, then a tram to Porto Soller, which is a nice day out.

Deia and Soller are quite "smart" so more expensive.

A day out diving in the Tramontana Mountains is good, covers Deia, Soller etc.

Drive to the lighthouse from PP to the worthern point of the Island, or take a boat trip.

There used to be a superb local ice cream stall outside the Eolo hotel, at the start of the Pine Walk. Brilliant if they're still there.

My advice is to avoid the Magaluf area at all cost, but that's just me.
