New Host Required. Linux Probably

Options
I've got a number of websites and I really need to sort out hosting as it's all over the place.

I am currently using 3 hosts. I want to bring all my hosting into one place to make it easier to manage.

I have ASP.NET hosting with WebHost4Life for my main website, using DotNetNuke on it - but this is pants and I want to move back across to Linux so need to start from scratch with that site and rebuild all the content.

I have Windows hosting with another company, powersofthosting. But this seems to be down a few minutes, usually late at night, 2-3 times a week. I currently use this host for my email, random files to show friends and a Wordpress blog I sometimes update. They tell me I have Windows hosting, but I am sure they are wrong and I have linux. But who knows :)

I would just sign up for powersofthosting except last night the whole lot was down for me, my site, my email, my FTP.

I also have some hosting on 34sp which I am running a searchable directory and blog from.

I am now at the crossroads where I need to get a proper solution.

I am looking for:
php/MySQL
Preferably unlimited bandwidth
HD storage space isn't overly important as I have small needs
CPanel
Within CPanel, one-click installs for Wordpress, Mambo and a whole raft of other similar goodies like stats, password protected directories etc etc. The usual stuff.
MUST have FTP.

I have about 10 domains at the moment I want to port over. Most are just registered and I've done nothing with them so far. I plan to buy more domains over the next 1-2 years.

I am not looking for domain name registration side of things as I manage this with 1and1 quite happily.

For comparison, I can get a reseller account at powersofthosting for £50/quarter (£180/year) so this is the budget I am looking at.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

I am thinking of this one at present: http://www.eukhost.com/reseller_features.php

    Can you spot something missing?
Do you know of something better?

Have you had a look at FastHosts or WebFusion?

I have used '1&1 Internet' for about 4 years for several Domains (all windows), with no problems at all.

I've tried the 1&1 solutions and for what I need they seemed very expensive, which is why I am trying to find a separate host. They are great/cheap for knocking up a quick website without needing any technical input, but beyond that I found they got pricey.

Fasthosts don't seem to have CPanel http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/resellers/package/web-hosting/

Webfusion also don't mention CPanel and seem pricier

I hate making decisions! There's always something you find you need by day 2 if you get it wrong, which is how I got into this position.

In the past I've signed up for a host, started to do something, realised the limitations then lost all impetus.

I don't want that to happen this time.

Oh, I also am quite likely to use server side includes.
If I can't achieve what I need for some functionality of my site(s) I would wish to knock up something that relies on these quite a bit.

If you want to stick to .Net, Discount ASP is a very good host. They offer good support and a wide range of features. I currently use them and they've been very good, while not costing too much either.

    There's a 6 month free voucher too:

I'm a developer though, so use it from a development perspective. Regarding one-click installs/solutions I don't use it in that sense, so can't comment.

You could take a look at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ as they seem to have a lot of offers and knowledgeable people on there.
I've seen a few offers I'm tempted by, but not taken the plunge yet.

  • I don't know if you are still looking but I can recommend Lunarpages as a host. I am on their basic plan which with an anonymous domain (I hate whois sites!) works out at around £50 for the year. I don't use huge amounts of bandwidth though (around 40gb a month, but there is loads available). The cpanel includes Fantastico which has Mambo, Wordpress etc, and you get 10 free add-on domains http://www.lunarpages.com/solutions.php

I have a coupon link on my own site for $25 off the basic hosting plan too, I used one of these last year and my hosting worked out at around £3.40 each month. Let me know if you want the link (I didn't want to post it on here as I didn't know if that was allowed, because they do pay you for any affiliate link that signs up for hosting).
Well I can't stand by the side
And watch this life pass me by

http://www.a2b2xs.co.uk/ are fantastic. I mentioned in another post that I've got a dedicated server with them.

As Omertron said though, the WHT forum is great. You'll have your pick of the special offers, and a quick search of that forum will tell you what the other users think of your intended host.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
