overboarding a ceiling and plasterboarding around a qindow question

Options
Hi all,

I've removed all the plaster from a box room as it was blown and loose, am now thinking about dot+dabing the room myself before i get a plasterer in to skim

I have a ceiling whict is slat and plaster? and looks like it has dropped slightly in a small section. I was planning on overboarding this with plasterboard and screws. Should I Do the ceiling before I do the walls? I do plan to add coving once the plasterer has done his bit

Also, around the window reveal, all the plaster is removed. I can see into the wall cavity at the sides and above. Should I plasterboard this as normal? Or build it up to a correct level with plywood first and plasterboard on top of that. The upper part of the window reveal did have a wooden board there originally, but was damaged so I removed it

Many Thanks

newbie and learning.........

cheers

i would remove the ceiling completely and then PB it.
regarding the windows, build it up with a mortar mix first, (use some steel mesh if required) then PB as per normal.

are you sure you have a lintel in place? insert a steel lintel if not.
    Get some gorm.
  • thanks, yes i can see the lintel in place

Only reason I was thinking of leaving the ceiling in place is becasue of the mess that would be created

Still, I should do the ceiling first before the walls then ?

Howabout the window, should i plasterboard the window reveal before the walls , or the otehr way around

i dont think it matters a great deal. i would do the ceiling first though.
same with the walls, before the windows. itll give you a straight edge to work to.
    Get some gorm.

Leave the ceiling where it is,theres no need for it to come down just cross lat it over the existing joist, board your ceiling first then walls,

Do you know how to dot and dab walls corectly as regards amounts of adhesive etc to lay on?

To be fair id just get a plaster in to do it all as it would only take him a day to board out,and i know from first hand if the customer atempts it themself it is never good as they dont know what the correct procedure is,and as such i dont do it any more and wont guarante the work.

i fully understand the point of trying to save money by doing it yourself, and learning by having a go, but id leave it for a profesional just to do it all, and to pay that bit more.
  • thanks, i undertand what you mean, i would rather it look good anyway

I've got a capenter in to fit new door linings and doors as i know i wont be able to do a good job myself

might just do the same with a plasterer,...........thanks again

overboarding the ceiling is a quick fix BUT like all quick fixes it will go bad again, there is a reason why the original is sagging and without removing it you cannot find out why,yes it is messy, but if a jobs worth doing its worth doing well,
