Assuming you have been sensible and have left your line rental with BT (make sure you are on BT Together Option 1 to keep the cost to a minimum), and (as you talk about using gateway providers for your international calls) are on Sky Talk Freetime, you should only use Sky for inclusive calls (i.e. evening and weekend calls of up to an hour to UK 01/02 landlines).

All other calls (depending on what they are and when you make them) can be made more cheaply via BT, 18185 or gateway providers (please see the 'HERE' link in my signature below).

I have my doubts about Sky's prices for calling 0844 numbers so would recommend always using the 1280 prefix when using them (and 0871/2 numbers) to ensure you only pay BT's prices. 0845 and 0870 calls are a different matter though - see HERE.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Article? I'd never thought of it in such a grand way before!

Would phone calls to the 0844 numbers for cheaper international calls count as chargable calls? Yes (they'll be charged to your BT account).

Why only short calls? Sorry. That applies to those on Primus Saver Option 2/Penny Mobile 2 CPS. In your case (using Sky Talk CPS), 18185 will be cheaper for all your landline to UK mobile calls (5p connection and 6p/minute weekdays, 3p/minute weekends). 18185's rates are to call any UK mobile - they're not network specific.

I'd recommend opting for Direct Debit payment because of the inherent dangers (see HERE) of giving CPA (continuous payment authority) on a Debit or Credt Card.

Finally, any idea about itemised billing on Sky? I think you can view them via your TV (but, I'm not sure). Anyone else know?

I just tried to get the free Caller Display but was told my number cannot be processed and I would need to ring TPS direct. My line rental is with BT. What would have caused this?
I've heard of problems with registering for Caller Display before - people with BT account numbers which start with 'GB' (a new computer system of theirs which has a number of bugs). Did the Caller Display part of your call work?

You can do your own TPS registration online anyway. It's completely separate from BT, so I've never understood why BT try to pretend it's their system.

I've also been trying to get the free caller display for a couple of weeks now without success. My account number starts with GB. I managed to speak to an advisor a few days ago who said they'll put it on my line for me. This morning, the caller display still wasn't working, despite him giving me the codes to turn it off/on etc.

I just literally called them again and the advisor told me that Caller Display is no longer free with BT Privacy, it's £1.75 per month. I'm also with Sky Talk so don't make any chargeable calls with BT. Perhaps this is why.

I have registered with TPS by myself.

He/she just told you that to get rid of you (a reprehensible tactic increasingly being used when a so-called advisor cannot answer a query).

    From the BT web site:
BT Privacy at Home is FREE, but you need to sign up for it. You can do this online by clicking the manage calling features link below. Or call us on Freefone 0800 800 150 and we'll set everything up.

    * BT Privacy helps stop unwanted sales calls by registering you with the Telephone Preference Service and giving you BT Caller Display at no extra charge. From 1st October 2006, customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT Caller Display. Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost if the following calls are made. Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, other wise BT reserves the right to charge £1.75 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £5.25 a quarter.
If you do not currently make calls with BT and would like to start making your calls with us again, please call 0800 121 8088. Alternatively, if you would like to make one-off calls that are chargeable to your BT bill then simply dial the numbers 1280 before you dial the phone number you wish to call.
** Caller display equipment is required. Caller Display requires a compatible phone,

Thank you. I shall try again tomorrow to see if I get an advisor who knows what they're talking about.

If you have access to your BT account online, you can also add it online too - I believe it's under Calling Plan or Calling Features.
