Skitahos (Greece) - Best area to stay?

Options
Hi all,

I have had fantastic holiday/trip advice from these boards before, so here I go again!

In the midst of rain and cold, like millions of others we want to book our summer holiday. Aiming for mid June or thereabouts for good prices.

Skiathos in Greece is the place I have set my heart on... can anyone advise the best area to stay? Main things for us is a nice beach within 10 minutes (sandy) and restaurants, bars etc within 10 mins walk. I like the look of Kolios beach area on that basis, a resort called Hermes - but wanted anyone's advice on any other spots that may be equally nice on the island :T

Pale blue water, sandy beach greenery and not too built-up but with enough to do is my idea of heaven...

Thanks in advance for any thoughts ;)

Troulos is lovely, nice beach not too over developed. We staed at La Luna apartments (not suitable for those with walking difficulties) in Aug 06 and it was brilliant. Skiathos town is a great place for the evenings people watching and good places to eat although the best restuant by far was Ambrosia and Necter in Troulos.

We went with Eclipse direct, part of first choice - la luna is exclusive with them and high;y recommended. I posted a review on trip advisor when I came back with some photos - under forum name neisar - so you may have to go through some of the reviews for a year or so to find it. hire a car and travel around to some of the more inacccessable beaches - fantastic. Thought banana beach was ok, bit busy. Boat trip around the island booked direct from the beach at troulos was very good - much better than those booked in the town.

Enjoy , its a lovely place.
Aim to win in 2013 - a holiday somewhere nice, New York break, treats for family & friends & some cash would be lovely!!!
  • Stayed in Aghios Paraskevi last year with grandson - very nice quite small with a few shops and tavernas - it depends on the holiday you want, beach was about 10-15 min walk, bus stop 5 - 10 mins there are regular buses to skiathos town and lot of other places. Its easy to hire a car too.
Absolutely loved it. Stayed in a place called the Ariadne apts only 15 studios/apts with pool they were fairly basic but very clean and the family that ran them were very friendly and helpful, never had a problem getting a sun bed.
  • I went in Sept 2006 and stayed in Skiathos Town - it was nothing less than ideal. We stayed at a small but very friendly hotel called Bourtzi at the top of the main street - the harbour and beach were each about 10 mins walk away, the restaurants and bars were close but not intrusive (I think that's just Skiathos' nature). Personally I would have found any other resort too small and too remote, and all areas were easily accessible by the regular local. bus. We went with Kosmar.

  • Interesting landings!

We want to book it tomorrow so I will read up some more and hopefully do some sort of cashback site for the final booking as I see Quidco offer cashback on Thomson. Have posted a message on Martins 'Beat My Quote' thread with all the details...

Ended up booking with Portland Travel (a sneaky, cheaper division of Thomson). Thomson price £670. Portland price £610. Not bad! Staying at Hermes apartments, lovely to be near 2 beaches & also have a pool for extra relaxing...
