Screencapping With Vista

Hello
I have an old version of PowerDVD 5 that I bought from ebay years back to be able to cap on my laptop that didn't have it, then I got a new one and it came pre-installed and had the CD with it - I think that was 6/7? Possibly. However, it was copyrighted just for Fujitsu Siemens and doesn't work on any other computer.
Now I have a new laptop and it's running vista. I've tried to install the old version and it worked for all of about a week and now - nothing! It won't screencap and it crashes when I try and put a DVD in it to screencap. I did the updates it linked to and they just wouldn't register that I had PDVD installed so wouldn't link it - I tried it so many times too!
So does anyone know of a free [or cheap] program that would screencap DVD's? I know there's VLC that you can set to do .avi's but I'd love if there was something easy and vista-usable to cap DVD's!
Thank you my lovelies
