Leaky shoes - Return??

hi,

I bought some shoes from Barretts about 6 weeks ago as my old pair were leaking ... and they were great up until a couple of weeks ago when these started to leak too .... I'm so frustrated!

I spent £15 of my very tight budget on these shoes and am really p!ssed off that theyre leaking as I have to walk to work and with the weather like it is at the moment, its very uncomfortable ...

I know that I can return something which is not "fit for purpose" but I feel a bit disadvantaged since I bought them what seems like an age ago and how the hell do I prove they are leaking??

Thanks

Jen

Given the current weather probably not too difficult to show they are leaking!

However six weeks of regular outdoor use of a pair of shoes which cost £15 is probably fair enough - 36p/day. (Though you say they began to leak after 4 weeks I don't see how you can now prove it.)

I am also not surprised they are leaking after all of this weather, consider buying wellies for your walking, I have. Also, I am currently wearing Clarks shoes (quite a sturdy pair for work) which cost me a lot more than £15, and they have also started to leak, but I wouldn't dream of taking them back, I really shouldn't be wearing them through all these puddles, they are not meant for that purpose.
  • really???

My last pair of shoes I bought well over a year before and they cost me a tenner and they never leaked... I had to get rid of them as the sole was !!!!!!ed. I only walk to work (10-15 mins) and then back again. I wear my slippers in the house and theyre not really good for anything apart from work as theyre so formal.

i keep hearing this alot about barratts shoes...never had a problem myself tho.
  • HI Jen

I think i would be bringing them back

I for one expect more than 4 or 6 weeks wear out of a pair of shoes:mad:

I have returned shoes to barratts after a longer period as they had a loose heel and got a replacement pair:D

If you don't try you will never know

    Thanks.

I too think I should get more than 6 weeks wear out of a pair of shoes and that they should be waterproof upto a point .... that is I'm not expecting to be able to go fly fishing or even tramping through puddles in them but to be able to walk down the street on a damp day (that is when it has been raining and the grounds wet or its spitting a little) and not end up with soggy feet. I cannot walk to work, regardless of the weather, wearing wellies!!

  • i agree with the op .shoes should be for use in all weathers except maybe very extreme types. l had a pair of shoes costing £35 (l usually buy £10 to £15 and never have any problems with leaking) and the first time out in rain my feet were soaking wet through the top of the shoe. they were a type of leather mocassin, but the stitching was not tight enough and not sealed like cheaper ones l have had. l took them back and had a terrible time with the sales assistants, who said l had worn them quite a bit so they are well used. .actually l wore them about 5/6 times the top was like new but the rubber heel had gone down slightly. l had a receipt about 4 months old. they couldnt seeem to get it through their heads (sales !!!.)that the fact the heelS had worn down slightly HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO D0 with the bad design or workmanship. l did not accept it and kept on until they gave me the choice of a credit note. l did take a different style but have found them to be most uncomfortable like they have no innersole.lwill have to buy some. l didnt have to prove the shoes were leaking/ good luck in taking them back:o

Leather is not a waterproof material.

If they were synthetic material then they would not be waterproof either.

No shoes are waterproof unless they are goretex or similar lined.

You should maybe invest in some protector spray/rainguard which will make your shoes water resistant which may help in the current horrible weather we are having at the moment.

Its only a couple of pounds from the supermarket & makes all the difference :)

You would not be able to complain that they are 'not fit for purpose' as they were not sold to you as waterproof shoes.

Mocassin shoes are definately not waterproof. The construction of them would always prevent them from being waterproof. The stitching around the top and the fact that it is one big piece of leather wrapped around (great technical description - notredface.gif) means that water would almost always get in to any type of mocassin style of shoe - especially through the top stitching.
