Password Locked Out

hi hope someone out there can help me before i went on holiday i bought my grandson a cheap laptop at the booty.
owner said it worked fine all discs came with it, but got back from holiday yesterday and grandson tell me laptop comes on but a little padlock on screen wont let him use it, how can i get past the padlock and into system, gutted for him as i paid for it for his course work, its a ibm thinkpad

    That means he's turned on the security in the BIOS. Depending on the model it may be possible to reset the password - take a tour of https://www.pc.ibm.com to find out if yours is one (I think it's the service manual you're looking for).

    Try repeatedly pressing both mouse buttons during boot-up, this works with some IBM laptops.

    Hi Im new here, but I have a good idea with the IBM's firstly, if you are lucky then it might only be a power on password, that can easily be reset without any cost or agro, simply remove the bios battery - you can find more detailled steps on the IBM service manuals avail on their website.

    If its not a Power on Password then it will be a supervisor password that can be the biggest pain in the backside to reset, any idea of the age/model of the laptop..usually somewhere inside the laptop when you open the lid.
