There are over 800 HD DVD's avaliable, BluRay have less than 1% of the total DVD market, They are not going to get 5% before the end of the year, so both formats will still be around for a while yet.

Is blueray a sony technology then, or just backed by Sony!?!

Reason I ask is because I hate Sony for the way they always try and screw everyone with their propriertry (sp?) technologies and try and charge the earth for them screwing other manufacturers and the consumer in the process...

    Sony Mini-disc anyone?
    UMD?
    M2 memory cards?

    They make my blood boil!!!
  • It is a sony technology and they knocked this up in super quick time to compete with HDDVD (HDDVD was a more publicly produced format and is complete unlike bluray where the players will have a "Profile" 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 versions ie certain things on the discs wont play unless you have the most up to date player. I would have preferred HDDVD to win though theres still chance for a turnaround though the odds are stacked against them. However if by selling these players super quick they can get to the mass market (may be too late now) they're still in the game.
Money, Money, Money ..... Banks/Casinos/Bookies give me all you money its a poor mans world....

Blue Ray are not allowing Adult Movie producers to publish in BR so they are all going to HD DVD, and they have a very large operation.

You are incorrect. Adult films are available on Blu-ray.
Sony will not allow their own production facilities to replicate adult material, but they assist other companies to make it.

As stated above to the non knowledgable this looks like a good deal, but its not ... I would suggest people doing their research before posting or suggesting buying a HD player or you may as well go buy a betamax player for what its worth ... join http://www.blu-ray.com and get you facts right ... re Adult movies .... wrong again...

    Theyre becoming available ....

"While the effect of adult films on the format war may be a heavily contested, the fact remains that there is a huge demand for this type of material. In Japan, the ability to release adult material on Blu-ray just got a whole lot easier. Assist Corp, who has handled most of the early adult Blu-ray content in Japan, has partnered with a company based in Taiwan to begin replication of adult titles. They are expected to begin production next month. Sony has long mandated that, while they will not allow their own production facilities to replicate adult material, they will assist any company which wants to do so. With the addition of this new production facility (which purchased the manufacturing equipment directly from Sony), adult content producers now have an additional outlet to manufacturer their features in high definition."

"DIGITAL PLAYGROUND GOES BLU-RAY® WITH “PIRATES” Blockbuster Adult Feature is DP’s First Blu-ray Release"

HD is dead Blu Ray is the new format, dont take my word for it ...

"A new NPD Group report shows that stand-alone Blu-ray player sales benefited greatly from the recent announcement that Warner would be going Blu-ray exclusive. The first week of January, before Warner made their announcement, there was a nearly 50-50 split between Blu-ray and HD DVD standalone players. The following week, after the announcement, Blu-ray players grabbed 93% of the market.

On the whole, December sales data showed that Blu-ray players held 60% of the standalone market, despite much cheaper players from the HD DVD camp. Looking at only the first two weeks of January, Blu-ray already has a nearly 70% market share which is sure to increase as the month continues and consumers continue to chose Blu-ray over its rival format."

bd.gif In the wake of the Warner announcements, major retailers are shifting focus to the Blu-ray format in hopes of accelerating the end of the format war. Trans World Entertainment, Newbury Comics, Video Buyers Group members and Hastings Entertainment are all beginning to emphasize Blu-ray as the next generation high definition format in hopes to spur growth in the relatively small market.

Mark Higgins, Trans World VP of DVD, videogames and consumer electronics merchandising commented, "As retailers, we need to simplify things for the consumers as much as we can with merchandising one format. We don't want to be biased, but that is clearly the direction that high-def production looks to be going."

Many retailers, especially online retailers with no shelf space limitations, will continue to offer both formats, but have been and will continue to order more copies of Blu-ray titles versus HD DVD titles due to demand. "Although it looks like the writing may be on the wall, DVDEmpire will continue to push both formats equally until our customers show there is no longer any demand for one format or the other," remarked DVDEmpire editorial director Shannon Nutt."

Until one format wins and one backs out the Hi def market cant move forward, which is why Warner Bros have taken a stand...

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger," Warner Bros. chairman-CEO Barry Meyer seconded.

This is a fantastic price for a great DVD player. The fact that it plays HD DVD and that you get 7 HD DVD's with it is a major bonus whether the format loses the war or not.

This can in no way be compared to buying a Betamax recorder.

You're obviously biased so I won't take your word for it.

At the end of the day it's down to the consumers. If HD becomes cheap enough and a lot of people buy into it then it will be the new format. However due to the Blu-ray propaganda machine and fanboys scaremongering people to not buy HD this might not happen. So who knows.
