Roof requires strengthening

We've just had the surveyor round before we get a re-mortgage. He was a little concerned that the roof structure may need to be strengthened.
He explained that the original roof was designed for slate tiles had been replaced by concrete tiles. These being heavier the roof should have been beefed up at the same time.
The house was built 1900 and the roof seems perfectly okay, no leaks, missing slates, damp etc.
What I'm looking for is advice on how do I strengthen the roof, is it for professionals only, or is it just inserting additional batons to support the tiles.
I would appreciate any advice,

thanks

Definatley one for the professionals, at a guess you would need to install purlins from one end of the roof to the other and then strut and support the purlins from the ceiling rafters.

Get a structural surveyor out to have a look. He will be able to confirm if it needs more support and do the calculations required. Once you have the drawings if its just adding some supports its DIY able.

If the roof needs to come off it may be cheaper to just replace the tiles with slate.

why was the tiles replaced from slate to concerete? If this has been for some time maybe you can justify that roof is adequate as it is as you say no leaks etc. Is there any signs of strain on the current roof supports?
If i was you get a 2nd opinion from another independent surveyor or structural engineer.

    Thanks to all,
I plan on getting hold of the surveyor and asking him to draw me a diagram of what he considers is required. If this is a huge job, ie one for the professionals, it's 2nd opinion time. If just a few batons need to be inserted, it’s out with hammer and nails.

I have tried searching the net for advice but no luck so far; can anyone recommend a good web site for general building repairs.
