Will this fan be ok for my nvidia fx5200 graphics card?

Hi everybody,

Further to my earlier thead about my noisy nividia fx5200 graphics card fan, I wonder if some one would advice me if this fan would do? As long as its a 40 mm fan (same as old one) does it work ok?

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/138602

It would mean I dont have to buy a new graphics card. Maplin have some 40mm fans and their store is beside me but they come without the 2 pin white connector (just red and black wires) and they can't advice me how I would attach the connector. Is this easy to do?

thanks

why not just get a pasively cooled card if noise is a concern, given how dire 5200's performance is even a £10 second hand ebay job is likely going to not only be faster but silent

The one hting it doesn't mention in the spec of that fan is us eon graphics cards. It may well fit if hte fan on it alredy looks similar but it may not. It's dificult to say without seeing the original card. Remember you will also need some thermal grease, it may come iwth some but it doesn't mention it.

    Hi everybody,

SO a passively cooled card has no fan? I wonder if anyone has any ideas on if nvidia has a agp slot card with 128 memory on it?

    thanks

    Now lets try again.

The fan you sugested is a case fan, you will proberbly it is a 12v fan (yes it is i checked ebuyer again) and your graphics car will require a lower voltage usually 5v. it isnt just as simple as finding a fan the same size and fitting it.

Pasivly cooled are ok but it was only up to a certain level, the more advanced graphics chips got the hotter they got so required active cooling. pasive cooling has got more advanced in the last few years from basic heatsinks to heatpipes that voporise liquid inside at the chip and rises through a heatsink and cools and returns to a liquid and drops back down to the chip. they do actually work.

whay are you limiting yourself to a 5200 nvidia with passive cooling if you are looking to replace the card?

A few of them for you

    My two pee.

I had an 128Mb fx5200 on which the fan died, but the card was so slow and weak I ended up chucking it, and getting an ATI Radeon 9800pro, 128Mb given away on freecycle (but not too expensive second hand either.)

Immensly better performance, particularly on DX9 games, (Halo being a particular favourite of mine.)

However the fan died on that after a week.

I bought the 40mm Maplin case fan that others mentioned on here, and used it. Required a bit of craftiness, because it's totally not meant to go on a graphics card. Basically just put two screws through the screw holes, with rubbery grommet bits to stop movement and vibration, and jammed the screws securely into the heatsink so the fan sat neatly over it, blowing air in. Soldered the 12V supply from the gfx card to the 12v input of the fan. (AFAIK, all card fans take 12V unless there's some special noise reduction-based on workloads/temperature going on.)

So you could try that: or just buy a new card.

    Hi everybody,

Thanks to everybody for their good replies and to those who replied on both thrreads trying to help me.

Well what I have done is to get a 12v 40mm fan from pc world for £2.49 which came with a 3 pin connector instead of the 2 pin connector that is required to connect it to graphic card nvidia fx520 . When I had a look at the old gigabyte ga 71xe motherbaord again it happens to have two 3 pins connectors one for the cpu and the other free. So I have used the free 3 pin connector on motherbaord to power the new fan on graphics card and its spinning ok

And I used a few old screws that I have lying about to put fan on heatsink of graphics card, though they are not the right ones but it seems to be screwed on tightly.

So far it seems to be running fairly quietly.

Thanks again to everyone for their kind help and suggestions and if this doesn't work out I will be taking the advice on getting a new card.

    regards
    martin57
