Thanks all, the information has given us more to think about. Where we are looking they are for purchase only, so they can't part buy part rent and tbh they wouldn't have the money for the rent if they had put all their capital to the buy.
After spending a long day with them yesterday we are now concerned about "grandad's" actual condition - granny reckons he has alzheimers but we think his problems are stemming more from a stroke he had. We are also not convinced he really wants to move out of the area where they have lived all their lives. Granny wants to leave but he has friends there (frankly its not an area where most people want to live!)
We are going to make some tentative enquiries with lenders whilst we get their flat on the market.The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0
