Never having had a passport I'm just guessing but surely it's valid until the date it expires so you can use it up to that date?

Depends on the country. Spain do not worry about how long there is to go on the passport as long as it is valid. (As I went to Alicante in Aug last year and came back 3 days before expiry).Check on the Spanish website to see if the Canary Islands are any different or age.

Most countries only require a passport that is valid for your intended stay. This includes the USA !
The EU for example has no way of checking that you still have a valid passport once you are in the EU. You don't actually need a valid passport to re-enter the UK, only to be able to prove that have have right of entry.

One or two countries do require longer validity but these are few and far between.
However, for reasons best know to themselves a number of tour operators and the like spread the completely untrue story that you need a passport to be valid for 6 months AFTER your visit - this is rubbish in most cases.

The last two times I went to Spain (Alicante) my passport wasn't even looked at, immigration was unmanned !

Hi We are going to Spain in February and a cruise in July so were advised to renew our passports , as ours run out in August 08. Yes its £72 plus new photos, but if your daughter intends to travel abroad again in the next 10yrs it is surely worth it, and the price wont be going down.
When we renewed ours the time remaining was credited onto our new ones. They do it up to I think its 8mths, something like that anyway so you dont lose out.

Oh and we did ours at the Post Office and paid the fee for having them checked £7.50 I think it was ,they were back in 4 days!!!!Couldnt believe it.

    Hope this helps.

    xx

i'd do it online if you're going to renew. you fill in the form online, and they send it prefilled... saves £7.50 for the check and send service....

What a good idea, but what do you do about the photos ?

Must admit we were glad we did the check and send as our photos werent acceptable, we did them in a booth in the post office but because of wearing glasses the flash showed up on the lens and we had to do them again, without glasses on,what a pain. They are so fussy about them now.

Much prefered the old one I was 10yrs younger then.;)

The form is sent out to you by the passport service to check and sign and you attach your photo and send it back to them. Much easier than using the post office service as I have found that things that the post office say will not be accepted, have been when I have sent off the original without changing it from what the PO say!
