Why Ariel? Probably a stupid question!

I've been reading the threads about getting nice clean washing and smell free washing machines and it often says to use Ariel powder as routine.
Why is this please? I've trawled through hundreds of entries on the threads and I can't quite gather why Ariel is so much more touted than other proprietary and non-proprietary brands.
Could I use any biological powder instead, as I would rather use one that's not tested on animals such as the Co-Ops own brand.
I'm currently using a 3 in 1 liquid - is this a huge no-no? I must say - the washing isn't particularly clean or fresh smelling, but it's a BUAV approved product.
Am probably being dim, but is Ariel in some way superior to ALL other brands of powder?
Thanks for any help - and sorry if it's a stupid question!

Are you aware that biological powder contains enzymes from cows' stomachs? Just a thought - some people make a distinction between animal testing and animal ingredients when choosing their products, and some don't.0

Hadnt realised that. We're using surf at the minute (think it was on offer) but I've ordered some soapnuts today and will see what they're like.
Thanks for that bit of info,Mary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

Ariel makes me itch
I use Daz with MrT own pure softener (or vinegar) and my washing smells lovely :j

Thanks Sola
Yes - I am aware of that which is why I tend to go for Co-Ops own stuff as that has been BUAV approved, thus precluding ingredients also.
Have sent off for my free sample of soap nuts - will give them a try too!

If non animal testing is important to you, then keep on buying Co-Op own. I personally buy Ariel because it gets my clothes clean at 30, so saves energy. I am trying Morrisons Cyclon atm though, which looks quite similar and also has a similar blurb on the back.

I've used Tesco own brand for years but lately I didn't think it was getting my washing clean. I had a free sample of Persil with Comfort recently and I've just bought my second box (on offer in Asda). I only use 1/2 the dose i.e. 1 tablet instead of 2 and my washing is definitely cleaner, clothes softer and it smells lush. I also use Persil colour for my colours.
Also if you always wash at 30 or 40 degrees you need to do a hot wash once a week to stop your washing machine getting too gungy.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

I subscribe to Which? magazine and from memory I think Ariel (bio) came out top in their tests.
I use Ecover but after reading a thread on the green board [ http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=685889 ] and a Good housekeeping test which said they were as good as Ecover and Ariel but a third cheaper than Ariel and half the price of Ecover I am going to try this brand: http://www.simplywashing.com/downloads/Image/library/news/14012008_good_housekeeping.jpg
Not sure about the price claim as I bulk buy Ecover in big 5 litre bottles which works out much cheaper but the simply washing site has free delivery so I thought it would be worth a try: http://www.simplywashing.com/ They do a non-bio too (which Good Housekkeping reckoned was actually more effective) - one of the reasons I don't use Ariel is sensitive skin. Will report back on what they are like anyway."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the

Can anyone tell me where the free sample of soap nuts is or where they can be bought from.

My local Co-op has had the simplywashing range half price:D It's very good, I'm very fussy and have been pleased with the excellent results. I'm well stocked up:DYou never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

I think you're several decades out there. Modern biological washing powder uses protease which is harvested from grown bacteria that can be found in soil."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
