Neither, you won't be future proofed as they do not have digital tuners.
If 'twer me I'd look at Panasonic. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
It would be good to know whether or not you have Sky + or similar. If you have, then the above recorders will both be fine for playing your DVDs and doing a bit of archiving directly from your PVR. If however you are using a terrestrial platform, best get one with a Freeview tuner.donnajunkie wrote: »which out of these two dvd recorders is the best one to go for?

Even if you have Sky or Cable, I'd still get one with a DTT aka DVB-T aka Freeview tuner in it.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0

thanks everyone. i should have gave more info. we do have sky+ and analogue vcr's, dvd players and dvd recorders have all worked fine with sky. our current sony dvd recorder is knackered and really i only need one for recording onto disc films and programmes i want to keep. hard drives fill up eventually, so while one with a hard drive would be better, it isnt needed. it isnt going to be connected to a hd tv so hdmi upscaling isnt needed either. the sony one we have has been rubbish from the start. after a while it didnt accept certain discs and the recording picture quality is poor in my opinion.
so all i want really is one that has a decent enough recording picture. that is the main priority. i am looking at paying under £100 as well so i know i am not going to get the best. as the two i have mentioned seem very similar i cant decide between them. so i am hoping someone has info about which performs better. or at least has experience of those brand dvd recorders.0 -

You have your answer, no one would go for either.
The build quality on the past Philips DVD recorders have been poor, especially compared to the likes of the Panasonic. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
well i might save for one of the expensive ones but it will only be used for recording coz we have a home cinema system for watching dvds. both lg and phillips are far from being one of the worst brands. i normally wouldnt be bothered and would just pick any but after a bad experience with a sony dvd recorder i am more careful.
do philips and lg dvd recorders have a bad reputation then?0 -
The Philips DVD recorders certainly do, yes. Couldn't really say about the LG I'm afraid.
I have liked Philips products in the past, and yes my current HDTV is Philips and my TV before that (a 28" Widescreen of 10 years - but went pop), but for DVD Recorders they were always ones to be avoided. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
thanks.
