Scottish Gas - Good job its not Winter !

Have had my central heating system serviced by Scottish Gas for the last
12 years . Basically apart for the annual service I have had one new water
pump fitted to the system.
Today was my annual service.
The engineer arrived to carry out this service to the Baxi heating system which includes a fire.
He told me that from his records the system was 14 years old.
I informed that the system appeared to be working efficiently with no
apparent faults.
He dismantled the systems boiler and then told me I had a problem.
The systems flue was working intermitently and may cause fumes to
enter the house.
He demonstrated this fact by a smoke device and told me I needed a new boiler.
He then condemed the system due to an inefficient flue.
Needless to say I was concerned regarding the safety aspect of his findings.
My hot water and heating is supplied by the central heating.
He contacted his office and asked as a prority for a advisor to attend who would speak to me regarding the options of a new system.
Graciously because I had, had a service contract with them for past 12 years I was entitled to a massive 5% discount.
The First appointment available :-
27th July, 2005 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Can you believe that and goodness knows what we would have done if it was
Winter.
The engineer told me that it would cost several thousand pounds for a new
boiler like the baxi to be fitted.
I feel that I would like a second opinion but do not know of any reputable heating engineers in Glasgow area.
I thought when you took the 3 star service plan you would have peace
of mind of having a reliable and dependable service from the gas board
but it is only when you have a problem like mine that you realise how wrong
you are.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

To be honest this thread makes me not want to get an inspection done.
All looks ok no problems but someone comes round and says that's going to be a couple of grand.
Maybe i'm just a tight yorkshireman though
