Making backup (XP) of brand new comp

I am on the verge of buying a new computer. I am going to get a fairly basic computer from Novatech with Windows XP installed (don't want Vista). I am not expecting to get a Windows XP disc with the machine.
Now do I need to make a 'backup' as soon as I can so that if I want to do a fresh install (some time in the future) I can. Or as I have an OEM copy (of XP on my now dead computer) could I use the discs from that but with the verification codes that I will receive with the new computer?
Thanks
