Could i ask anyone who is living in a small 1 bed ground floor flat with a combi boiler and a gas cooker to examine their gas bills for the last couple of years? the figure i need is your total kWh used divided by the number of days your bill covers, and preferably 2 seperate totals, one over winter, one over summer. I'm looking at useage, rather than pricing, as our dispute with them goes back over about 3 years (and we all know how much the prices have been changed in that period!).

we're having trouble with our gas supplier (very long story and i'm not gonna go into it here) and there's a huge variation in the amount of gas we're using, some of it is due to natural difference between winter and summer but a lot of it isn't, and i suspect that something is wrong somewhere. We've got a debt counsellor helping and intervening for us between the company and ourselves, and we're close to going to Energywatch, however, i'd like to know if our figures are unreasonable for a 1 bed flat. If a couple of people could provide comparison figures i would be extremely grateful.

If anyone wants, once i've had a few figures, i'll post ours too.

Many thanks -

keth

Hi Keth, I would post mine, but:-
    a) I can only find odd ones, the rest are lost in the black hole of my filing system and,
    b) whilst we are in a 2 bed flat, with a combi and a gas hob, I've just realised we have 8 fairly big double rads and 2 heated towel rails....no wonder my DD was upped to £70 per month. it's now approx £50 per month.

Having looked through, our actual readings were...
    13 Jan 06 8065
    17 Jan 07 10155
    18 Jan 08 12412

So, in 06/07 we used 2090 units (12 months)
and in 07/08 we used 2257 units (12 months)

I don't know if this is of any help, but we don't have any other form of heating and we have very high ceilings in a property built in 1894.

thanks for that, i do appreciate it.. however i'm a bit confused. when you say 06/07 do you mean June 07 (i.e in a month you used 2090 units) or do you mean in 2006 you used 2090 units?

    thanks !!!

Sorry no, I mean in the whole year Jan 06 to Jan 07, and then again to Jan 08.
I suppose it would be clearer to say that in 2006 i used 2090
    and in 2007 i used 2257.

Obviously, I haven't converted to Kwh.

ahhh!! ok thankyou very much for that :) no problem about converting - i can do that, i got the instructions somewhere!

okay: in 2006 you used 66,198 kWh. In 2007 you used 71,488 kWh (an approx figure cos i've had to use the multiplier value, conversion value and calorific value from my bill). I'll give it a while to see if anyone else posts, then post what ours were - i won't be able to do what you've done and post for an entire year as our bills just haven't come that regularly but i can do close to that. it's illuminating!

    thanks for responding!!

Keth, have you seen this point mentioned by Cardew?
It was posted on another thread.

It sounds like you could have a metric meter i.e. measures in cubic metres.

You have been charged for an Imperial meter - measures in cubic feet; 1 unit = (100 cu ft).

A unit on an Imperial meter is approx 31kWh which would tie up with your 323 units(9976 - 9653) equating to 10,134kWh.

on a metric meter a unit is approx 11kWh so 323 units would be about 3,600kWh.

Look at the meter and see if it has 'cu ft' or m3 on it. (normally in small print at the bottom)

It may be worth checking your meter.

i will do, in the morning. we're in communal flats and the meters are in the dark dingy binsheds, so i ain't going out there in the cold and wet!!!

I have a feeling this was actually checked out way back when we first started to look into this (about 2 years ago - told you it was a long story!) but i'll check again.

    thanks though!!
