Is my pc dying or can I help it?

My pc is a few years old, and over the last few months has been getting slower and slower. Certain programs freeze and then close, internet is really slow and just generally I think its 'ill'.

I have several hundred pictures stored on it - could this be the problem?

  • I doubt the photo's are the problem. Back everything up and do a reinstall of you OS from scratch might help.
Nothing to see here, move along.

the re-install option should only be done if you have original disks, drivers, COA, etc otherwise you will spend ages trying to get your pc running again and if you have no other access to the internet in your home that could be a very long time.

Work your way through the first 4 posts here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269

have a look at defragging - give more details of the PC processor memory free space etc ...
    Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.
  • Take it you have checked for viris , spyware etc

If the pictures are somewhere in my documents or desktop then it can slow things down "allegedly", but it's more likely to be just old age. Before you do the defrag consider setting your page file to nothing (make a note of the original setting 1st).

control panel -> system -> advanced -> performance (settings)-> advanced -> virtual memory (Change) -> No Page File (set)

    and then reset it afterwards.

clean it up first. virus,s etc give these sort of problems.
only after doing all that, should you consider a restore point or a reinstall.
if the photos/data etc. are precious, then make a backup now. onto another hdd or onto cd/dvd media.
    Get some gorm.
