Beware cancelling free broadband with Talk Talk.

A mate of mine tried to cancel their so called free broadband yesterday with Talk Talk .He was happy to keep the line rental and call bundle with them.

They were told by the advisor that it comes with the call bundle and they would need to change bundle and take out a new contract, or move to another supplier,
and if they moved new supplier will probaly charge connection, even though the line is working.

Is this correct? If so it appears that switching to LLU is not so cost effective after all, if you subsequently want to leave your existing supplier.

More or less true. He couldn't change broadband provider and remain on their LLU service but wouldn't have to stay with TT for voice/calls unless it's financially advantageous to do so (T&Cs, breaking contracts etc.).
To change to another non-LLU TT voice package I would imagine they would have to reconnect the line back to BTs network and who picks up the tab, if any, for that I wouldn't like to say.
Bottom line is he would have to get new providers for line and broadband.
Some ISPs would treat the broadband side of things as a new connection so maybe a charge there.
When I escaped from Talktalk I was reconnected to BT network without any charge but a new broadband connection was £40. Might be some offers on the go now though.
Plenty of scope in this scenario for lots of cash to change hands and not mentioned at all when the "free broadband forever" scam appeared on the horizon.

  • Hi,

The broadband can be cancelled if you have not moved onto the unbundled 8mbit service. The only time it cannot be done, is if you have been unbundled as your phone line will no longer be going through BTs equipment in the exchange. Your friend can tell which service he is on by looking at his bill. If it states TalkTalk LLU then he is unbundled

So if Talk Talk unbundled your exchange and you then decided at a later date to move to a new service provider, you could well get some sort of charge from your new supplier for doing so,even though its a live service.

But if Talk Talk had not unbundled your exchange you would not pay a charge.

    Such is progress.

I understand that the LLU service is faster because it all goes through TalkTalk equipment (or indeed any other LLU provider). If you then decide that you want to go to another supplier, then I read on another thread that is around £140 (same as a new connection) as BT have to physically move the connection back onto their equipment. There is apparently OFCOM interest in this fee as it seems high (to normal people anyway) and prevents competition when the point was trying to increase it.

Not sure about that. Whatever the fee involved be it for regrading from llu back to wa or a new (re)connection it's openreach who do the actual work.
They charge the same fee to any provider who wants the work done, BT, Madasafish, Phone Co-op, Post Office, Plusnet or whichever line provider you migrate to. The competition element then comes into play as they can then charge you whatever they like.
