Have just started using my local library in Melton Mowbray again and wanted to give them a big thumbs up. A fantastic facility for the community with helpful, friendly staff and an up to date collection of books, cds, dvds etc.
The library is now open late in the evenings too!
If you've not used your library recently, get down there! You may be suprised.

Staff in Hatfield library couldn't be more helpful - they have Martin's book on their Must Read stand, that says it all. I love the library - I read tons more books nowadays and things I would never have bought in case I didn't like it. I agree, libraries do rock!0

............and what about the free internet use too? I've taken advantage of free internet access in several libraries on my travels.:cool:10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j [/COLOR]:cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. My local library is great too. It's very small, in a former (small) school building but it also has a great range of books - fiction and non-fiction. And if they don't have something in stock, they can order it from another library in the county (think this is pretty nationwide though) which means that I no longer have to spend bags of cash on buying a book that I'll only read once!Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0

yep good old libraries....
We make full use of the library van, which visits every 4 weeks.
It carries, books for all ages and all genres, plus a selection of vids, dvds, cds and audio cassettes. If we want anything specific, they bring it next month.
It stops in different spots around the village, so you can't miss it, you can't forget to return your books, and if you miss it cos you're away etc., there's no fines.
There's no internet as yet, but I guess it's only a matter of time.
What a fantastic service, and it's free.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
I took my nephew to a tot's reading session which is every week, and free! Unfortunately his parents don't seem to share the enthusiasm for book as their child does - he absolutely loves it at the library!
Fantastic!0 -
With libraries it is case of use it or lose it.
I love libraries. My local even runs a homework club to help the local school children. A few nights a week it is open until 7pm.
It seems strange that everyones council tax pays for them but loads of people don't use them.
Mine offers internet access as well video and dvd hire for a week at at a time.
I need to take a wander down but they are not open tomorrow. Oh bum.
Saves me a fortune and lets me read authors that I might not have choosen if I had to pay to buy the book.

I fully agree! Even those books that I would have bought and then read them once would be given away, but like you I've read authors that I may not have chosen in the first place. It's also a good way of getting the Richard and Judy recommended books!
In the libraries near where I used to live, they started to have a few author evenings come to give talks about their work. These were great and a friend and I would go along. The library staff organising the events were really excited as we were the only ones there under 50 (we were 20 at the time). However, for free we were able to listen to and borrow these famous authors books. Unfortunately, not enough people supported the events and so the county council funding was lost. I'm always on the look out for more of these events, but it seems that no one else does them.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0
