Well the last time I bought it it was there, but I just checked on the online store and it isn't listed. It has been a while since I last bought it however. It's called casava flour in some places, especially in the ethnic food stores where I have found it.

Another one who sells it http://www.africanfoods.co.uk/buy-cassava-flour.html
which is somewhere else where it is best to order more from them at once because of the delivery charges being high.

All tapioca is made from cassava (yucca root) so the stuff for deserts must just be ground less fine, wonder if you could just blitz it in the food processor? Same as I do with sugar to make it caster sugar.

Just looked through a few sites, it also gets called tapioca starch and powder. Some even call it yucca root flour.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb

thanks for the info & links :)

my nearest Tesco's not a very big one, so I'll check out one of the larger stores next time I'm near one of them
  • I bought some in my local chinese supermarket recently specifically for that chocolate cake in the guardian. I haven't got round to making it yet though. It was labelled as tapioca flour.

I knew I'd seen it in one of my local ethnic shops :)
must've been the Chinese supermarket, I'll nip in there next time I'm passing
  • I made the cake for my birthday party last weekend (19 Jan) and it was fantastic! I'd do a few things a little differently next time but it really turned out well, best chocolate cake I have had in years!

The tapioca flour was a bit tricky to track down (in South London), but found it in an African shop in Stockwell. This shop was in a parade of shops including middle Eastern grocers, Asian, Chinese, etc. but the African shop was the only one that had it. The guy who served us said that he sells it to Africans and South Americans primarily, living in the local area (as a previous post said, it's cassava).

The recipe did contain a suggestion if you cannot find the flour, basically buy ordinary tapioca and put in food processor, but I'd recommend making the effort to get the flour as it made a huge difference to the quality of the cake.
  • Tapioca flour is the same as Cassava flour and Manioc flour. You should be able to get it in any good Asian or African stores. Used in breads or cakes it gives a chewy texture. It can also be used as a gluten free thickener in sweet or savoury dishes. 1.5kg costs about £2.30. Just bought some today and the cake smells great####

    Hi Livalot,

I, like many others would recommend your local Chinese supermarket - but if you don't have one nearby, I have used this one a couple of times for online shopping, and they are pretty good:

But you may have to buy quite of lot of flour at once - it's flat-rate shipping up to 30kg!
