my no brand challenge

i have decided to set myself the challenge of dropping all the brand names from our grocery shopping

so far i have calculated that by dropping a well known creamy cheese spread for the stores own i will save over £37 a year

also by switching from branded nappies to store own (now that i have found a store own im happy with) will save £70 a year

im already getting addicted

I'm changing to Value where possible - if thats not possible then I'll get the shops own pretty much. Off the top of my head I can't think of much that will be branded except the odd bit like Babybels (we're both on Slimming World and these make a good snack for lunchboxes).

The only other thing (looking at my mysupermarket shopping list for tomorrow) is offers! If there's something cheap branded going thats cheaper than store own I'm sorry but it's in my trolley! :rotfl:

I've nearly achieved it, the only brands I purchase are Branston pickle & Gillette razors. I've tried others, but they don't come close in my opinion.

    Good luck misspenny.

I've just looked in the cupboard and the only branded items I have are Helmans mayonaisse (cos it was on bogof) and HP sauce (cos OH bought it.) Everything else is own brand Tesco, Co op or Lidl. ;)

It's always worth trying the non brand products - there's not much to lose and plenty to gain. you can always be sneaky and try putting things like cereal back into an old branded box to see if you can fool other members of your family! some people will just reject things before they've even tried them.

the brands I have gone back to are Heinz for ketchup and tomato soup, Hellmans mayo, Branston pickle. In fact the other week my girls were looking for packaging with the royal crest to show the company was by appointment to the queen and the only thing we could find it on was Lea and Perrins Worcester Sauce (don't think they make a value version of that yet!)

  • Snobbery is a strange beast. I avoid branded goods if I can, not just because I think they are as good as generic brands, but because I feel I'd look like a sucker by paying more for a "name" The same perverse logic means I won't wear clothes with other people's names on them (Paul Smith, Tommy Hillifiger, even Christian Dior - chance'd be a fine thing!)

Marmite is the only item where I Accept No Substitutes. I really like this idea misspenny - how can we criticize teenagers for being blinded by expensive brands of trainers, etc., when we are often just as bad ?

I've done this for years thought threre are a couple of things that HAVE to be made exception for..

Harpic.. NOTHING else works that well
Comfort fabric conditioner.. Due to eczema and allergies we can't use any other.
John Frieda.. sorry.. but I won't have a scabby itchy scalp for ANYONE.. though I do stock up when it is half price.. like right now it is in tesco and I bought 6 bottles half price in asda's reduced rack a few months ago.
    Lush.. nuff said!
Mitchum deodourant.. hubby stinks and sweats like three pigs wrapped in clingfilm in a sauna!
Perfume.. cheap ones just aren't good enough! (Hugo boss for me and CK for hubby)
Colgate.. ALWAYS on offer somewhere or 'free' with boots points.

    Everything else is cheapy stuff
