Second Income: Too Scared!

Hey everyone;

I know this must sound silly; but I'm really scared to follow up a second income.
I spoke to my local and they said they'd love to have someone extra for a few shifts a week (this was on the 6th) but I havn't done anything about it. Every time I think about following it up I feel sick to my stomach, really so nervous!
I've never worked in a bar before and I'm scared I'll find it tireing. But I currently work Part Time, and Feb & March are my only chance really as the students take the jobs from april onwards, and I'll be off sick from april till the summer as well.

Maybe I should phone them at about eleven. Someone might be in at about eleven. Eeeek.

  • Go for it! :j :j :j I'm sure they would have you start off on a trial basis, and if you were finding it too tiring, you could look into a different kind of work.

You never know, you might end up really really enjoying it :D

I've never done bar work either but if I lived somewhere with a pub nearby I'd definitely consider it. I was just moaning about how I had no social life this morning and bar work would improve that situation.

Good luck, deep breath, nice cup of tea, then give 'em a ring.

Let us know how you get on.

Deffo phone them. Do 1 shift if you like it carry on!

I have worked in 2 pubs on and off for 5 years. I do enjoy it, but generally for short stints (6 months-1 year at a time) as I get so tired. If i wasnt working so far away from home during the day I would deffo be doing a few shifts in the evening.

Just make sure you have at least 1 day off where you dont do a shift in the pub or your regular job.

    Good Luck!

Like the previous poster said...go for it!
I lived in a pub for 18 years and bar work was always my favourite (probably cos I don't shut up and I loved talking to everybody :D )

It's a lot easier than you think and it really is a lot of fun...
  • It's abotu seven minutes walk from mine in the snow, 5 if I walk fast, so I have no excuse really! I'm just finding out who to speak to now, and finishing the rota at my normal job today.

Then I can get something sorted! If I don't procrastinate like usual that is :o

Go for it and then use half the money for debts and half for spending - then you'll really appreciate it :D

I hope you've bitten the bullet and rung the pub about the job.

I worked in a busy town centre pub years ago when my first husband had left me with a lot of debt.
It was fabulous - I worked Friday & Saturday nights so it got me out of the empty house and in company and made me a bit of money too.

Do let us know how you get on.

  • I hope you have sorted it out now . You will have fun as as Gemmzie said you can pay off debts with some and some you can have for your own spending. Goood luck :D

  • Hi always_amazed,

Go for it! Pub & bar work is great fun, and a way of socialising once you get to know the locals

The best part is it doesn't cost you a penny, you go home with more money than you started with and if you're really lucky someone might even buy you a shandy! Good luck!

  • I loved bar work and often think about how I would like to do it again.

AND now you don't have to put up with smelling like an ashtray at the end of the shift it will be even better.

I worked in a pub attached to a restaurant (I use the term restaurant loosely) and a really rough pub and in both I met some great people that have given me a different perspective on life that I still really value now and who I would never have encountered if I hadn't done it.

  • Right; my mate is busy just now but she has his number (there is no one at the pub just now!) so this evening I'll try again, I should be home by eight so can pop in then.

If they do give me a try it'll be a good excuse to look neater as I often look scruffy, and it's not a scruffy place :)

Thanks for all your replies; will keep you posted!!
