They're basically saying that right now, in these conditions, almost every managed fund, share and index tracker has plummeted in value due to the upheaval that's just happened worldwide. There is absolutely no way any managed fund you can invest in in this country would have come away without damage, and the managers who have had to deal with it are therefore in one of the most difficult times they're ever likely to see. It would appear, therefore, to be a little harsh to refer to your fund as "managed by monkeys" when the FTSE itself has fallen nearly 20% in the last month and your managers have fallen with it.
Unless of course you have about 7k in there and they've managed to make it fall by 4k... THAT would be pretty special.
However, to come back to the point at hand: it's not your fund managers' faults that the fund has dropped in value. They don't control the world markets and attitudes. If you're going to insult them, insult them for a good reason, like being a bank product in an investment world (i.e. almost invariably terrible compared to like-for-like asset management company products)0 -
I think some people have an expectation that managers are able to predict crashes ahead of the event (aka market timing) and will therefore switch to deep cash positions or into markets out of their remit. I've said before that this is unrealistic to expect managers to perform miracles either before or during the event. Their funds will bear the brunt along with trackers.
Here's the breakdown of the factors that affect your porfolio returns:
Asset Allocation 94%
Stock Selection 4%
Market Timing 2%
So if you've decided to invest in UK equity (either via a fund or tracker) you are 94% responsible for the outcome.0 -
pennine, it means that you're expecting a miracle and your adviser should either have realised that you didn't understand what you were buying or explained it better so that you did understand.
The start of this year has seen some of the worst market performance for years and few if any funds, however good, will have seen anything other than drops. That's what you bought into when you invested: drops sometimes in exchange for a greater average growth over the long term - meaning years.
You wrote fund singular. Does that mean that within the ISA there's only a single fund being used?0 -
unrealistic to expect managers to perform miracles either before or during the event
For a variety of reasons, among them
A Fund usually has guidelines relating to how much can be held as cash and how much is held as stock, and of course which sector of stock it can hold
Most funds are too large to be easily switched into different stock quickly or easily'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

You are in a naff fund. Sitting tight is not the best option. It wont cost you a penny to revise the investment by transferring it to a fund supermarket and getting a better spread.
Although from a compliance point of view I cannot say the following officially, the investment is naff, its not going to improve in quality.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Christ, I wish all I had on my investments was just a 3k drop from 100k pot. I've got a 7k drop on what was 83.5k. Still, when the market goes back up my upswing will be just as dramatic... I hope !! :rotfl:Mortgage Free in 3 Years (Apr 2007 / Currently / Δ Difference)

Its down because of the markets. That is no surprise and a 3k drop shouldnt be worrying you as that is natural in a cautious managed fund during bad times.
The bit that concerns me is that you have all your money in one fund and its in a rubbish fund that has done nothing since it was launched and never likely to do anything.
Most of these are sold on ISA and unit trust basis so its possible to sell the investment and reinvest it with a better spread at no cost to you.
I have no confidence in that Halifax cautious managed fund as an investment and waiting for it to get better I would view as a waste of money because whilst you are waiting there are better options that could go up quicker and possibly even be lower risk to you than that fund.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). ldv400, there are many different companies that provide cautious managed funds. This particular balanced managed fund is not a good one so you could transfer to a better cautious managed fund. It's performance over one year is 66th out of 131 in the sector, a loss of 3.5% while the best produced a gain of 10.4% and the top 14 achieved gains over 3%. Over the last month only 12 managed a gain - and those may well show a loss soon - but this one came in 120th place, losing more than almost all of them.0
