hi
my friend and i just went through this wih our son/daugter respectivley-got great fully comp cover for 17 year old duaghter with prudential for £895
my frinds son on the other hand-and shes very torough and very good at haggling-got third party for £1700-the lowest she could find. app its not sex discrimination because stats prove young boys are more likey to claim than girls-sorry but it sems so unfair i know. my youngest son may have 2 wait til hes 21 to learn when premiums lower!! good luck xeven god cant change the past-no matter how many times i cryfor levi, leo, smudge and arfa:A my angels0 -
I insured my daughter last year as provisional (17yo) at around £800 (Kwik Fit). Test was passed in march 07 and just renewed her policy with Tesco £565.
Having 1 years NCB and only having a full licence for 10 months caused a bit of consternation.
Of course insuring boys is a completly different story!!
His car is of course insurance group 4 or 5 which won't help.0 -
When my boyfriend got his first insurance last year it was quite high, he was 23 and it was alot of money to go fully comp, and his car was only worth £800 so he didnt want to pay loads. The best bet for a car worth that much is to go TPFT it cuts the price down alot. My boyfriend ended up with a company called MC Edwards i think, just google it and you will find it.0

Remember insurance is like everything else. You get what you pay for. Ok, so you only use insurance in the event of a claim which we all hope to god will not happen. However, if it does this is the time when you'll know how good the insurance company is or isn't. Dare I say it but new/young drivers are the ones most likely to have a claim. Best of luck with your search though and I hope your nephew has a lifetime of driving pleasure without incident.CHEAP doesn't mean ETHICAL0

Go check out Elephant.co.uk
I can (unfortunately) confirm that their claims department and they way they handle them is top notch. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
When I was 22 I had a Honda Civic Type-R (insurance group 17) and the quote was by far the best. Eventually I got rid of that and got a more economical Civic, insurance group 6 and they were still by far the best quote.
I renewed my insurance this week for £800 full comp. I am 23 now, and have had the one crash I mentioned above. That price was £150 cheaper than anywhere else."I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -
Try https://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk I know they're on confused.com but they quote me over £700 on confused whereas my renewal is £514. Try Third party fire theft as that seems to come out cheaper than third party only for me. Also try fully comp with highest excess and decide whether the saving is worth it or not. Don't go fully comp for the sake of it, it's only a £500 car, worst happens you won't get any money back as the excess + inexperienced driver excess will wipe it out and your insurance costs will still rise.
Insurance costing more than the car is a fact of life. I can't see why people think they should pay more for the car than the insurance, or that insurers are obliged to insure cheaper?! Problem is that tonne of metal can cause lots of damage to other cars and property, especially in the hands of a young person.
Ideal approach would have been to check out how much insurance is before buying the car. If he can't afford the insurance he may have to sell this car and buy something a little more conservative. Diesels can be a little more to insure from what I remember searching for quotes.0 -
Hi thanks for all your replies,
Me and his dad have spent most of the day ringing different companies, and filling in internet forms, direct line are still the cheapest at £1800,
elephant.com was £3000, we have also found that in most cases it is cheaper for fully comp rather than tptt, the insurers have great pleasure telling us it would be half the price if he was a girl so we may yet have to perform a diy sex change,:rotfl: .
just as an after thought i wonder how much it would be if you were a hermaphrodite(probably somewhere in the middle)Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
just had the same problem with my 17 year old son. Directline came out the cheapest at £1,900. that is for a group 1 car!
At 18 years old you have more options. Norwich union do a pay as you drive and they do a simple insurance as do Tesco.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I just had another thought. Try getting quotes for him as if he had done pass plus and see how much that saves. Then look around for the cheapest pass plus course, and if the cost of the pass plus is less than the reduction of cost of insurance it's worthwhile doing.
Also try adding parents on as named drivers, even though they may never drive it, as it can bring down the quote. Try both with and without to see which is cheapest.0 -
