Anyone else object to paying Business Rates? It is just a tax on enterprise and not negotiable - the correspondence comes in envelopes clearly marked "Inland Revenue" yet it is collected by local councils.
MOST interesting is the recent introduction of Small Business Rate Relief - never heard of it? No you won't have as the Govt kept it quiet - apply if you have a business property with a rateable value less than £10,000 per annum and you can get up to 50% discount on rates (sliding scale).
If you are in business or know someone who is make sure you take advantage of this potential saving - it can save you a fortune and it is not being publicised - the onus is on the ratepayer to apply - I wonder why?
Good Luck

A lot of councils are wrtiing to the small businesses and suiggesting they might apply. I can only presume that this is beacause the relief is paid for from central funds and not the councils's pot of money.
The same situation arises with 'council tax' rebates for single householders, etc. The counciul is really keen for people to claim as it's not the council hat pays the rebate.
Councils around are way are always finding ways of extorting money from you - their latest ruse is to charge you (via the skip hire company) £20 for having a skip parked outside the house!!!!
As a small business owner, when the business rates were capped by the tories some 15 yrs ago, the council then found they could charge separetly for 'bins' so they now charge £250 per annum extra for getting your std wheely bin emptied. I asked what our original rates were for and why they had introduced an extra charge and was told 'street lighing, etc' and "because we can"!!
Did you know an anagram of 'politicians' is 'lying scum'?0 -
Sheffield hid the info on the back of the annual rate demand.
They want almost £500 pa for a bin
Can't win really so at least trying to spread the news about rebates as it is not widely known or understood around here.
