Sol00 do you know if you are allowed to keep the maintenance loan (not the grant) for the year if you defer in January?

Hi. Are you meaning what you've been awarded so far? If so, you would normally be ok with that and they would block any further installments. Grants however are normally reclaimed right away as this is not repaid.

Thanks for that. I was "apartantly" overpaid 1120!!! Somehow anyway. I think it was because the official last day of recorded attendance at the uni was 2nd december, even tho i didnt leave until later. theres noway I could pay this all back, nor would I be able to attend uni if I didnt get the full mantance grant as I would struggle with the full amount taken off!!

So if i am entilled to the full grant of 2835, they will take the full amount off the first year? So because I withdraw from my first year, I can't realy go back can i? lol mental. Surely they could share the 1120 over the 3 years so it doesn't affect it too much?

Yes its a final demand immediate repayment to the LEA etc etc.

They have done this as well, (deducting the overpaid amount over the next 3 years), check with your LEA as more often than not they'll try to help.

I think check with your Local Authority as others have suggested.

What is worrying my mogimorgan is you say your recorded leave date is different to your actual leave date. Ask your local authority what date they receievd from the Uni and if you don't think that is right you need to contact the Uni that you left to either get this changed or for them to explain to you why this date is used.

This could be important in terms of how much you are entitled to keep but the Local Authority can only go on what the University tell them about the dates - however if you asked nicely and were lucky it is possible the Local Authority might chase this on your behalf (but they dont have to).
  • Yes it is true that I didn't leave university until much later, however the record of attendance was different. This is due to the fact that only one lecture took a register, and the last time I signed that was 2nd December. To be honest they have not charged me a penny for the time I was there, so they have been okay on that issue.

I rang my LEA yesterday and have been informed that when I apply again for finance, they will take the 1120 for the year out of the full amount I am entillied too.

Also since I came back from university, I no longer live with my parents. I rent my own house but was told they will still need my parent finance info? Is this correct? As when I first went in Sep 06 my parents were on benefits, however now, my step dad is earning around 400 quid a week. Will this mean I will get less money again?

Doesn't look like I could afford to go back to Uni, which is a shame. Oh well.

    Thanks all for your advice!

Is the £400 a week gross income, or take home?

It is not that high an income if they have other dependents as this is taken into account. I think they knock £2000 off for the first child and £1000 per child after that. Plus a bit is knocked off for him having a partner.

Then they take certain outcomes into consideration, such as pension payments, mortgage etc.

I would say you will still get some help, even if it isn't the maximum available.

Yes that's correct. If you're under 25 you need to declare your parent's finances for an income assessed loan. The only exception is if you have self supported for 3 years or more.
