charges following missed transfer

Hello

Posting this on behalf of a friend who instructed AMEX to pay off his MBNA outstanding bbalance. He was told the payment would have happened within the next 10 days. After two weeks he saw no transger, rang them up and was told nobody had executed the transfer. It was then reissued and reached the account in a further 2 weeks which is about normal I think. As a result of the missed transfer he has to pay interest for about 2 months of the CC bill (it was a recent expense). He spoke to AMEX and was told there is no guarantee as to delays in the transfer. But it seems to me that if the transfer was not even executed even if it was confirmed they should actually pay his interest bill given its their error.

Has anyone faced a similar problem before? Is it worth writing to them? Thanks.

Most cards make it absolutely clear that they do not guarantee that the BT payment will reach the account in time and advise the customer to ensure that they make their normal monthly payments.

I am afraid that your friend is responsible for paying off his MBNA card on time, but I can understand why he feels agrieved with AMEX.

Yes he understands this. My only point is that the BT was accepted and by their own admission never executed until the person in question rang them up again after 2 weeks asking about the status.

It seems to me that one thing is not guaranteeing the timing of BT orders, quite another not guaranteeing that they will actually act upon a confirmed and accepted instruction.

What has your friend got to lose? Amex made a mistake that cost your friend money - to keep their customer's goodwill, they should reimburse the extra interest incurred. I'd pursue it, if it was me.
