What's the best way to close a credit card account ??

This may seem like a really daft question, but what is the best way to close a credit card account ??

Is it better to phone them up and ask for it to be closed?
or
Is it better to send a letter, so they have the closure request in writing?

Also, should I cut the card up and send it back, or just shred it?

Thanks

All I have done is rung them up - then you will receive a letter from them confirming the closure. Cut the card up and bung it in the bin.

  • It's been a few years since I've been asked to confirm an account closure by post. A phone call should do the job and, as stated above, they should send you a confirmation letter.

The only small issue I had recently was when I couldn't remember one of my security questions when trying to close my Morgan Stanley card. They advised me that they couldn't close the account over the phone until I could answer the question and that I would have to write in to close the account. I remembered the missing answer later on that day and phoned them back up and closed the account.

Ring them, send a letter and ask for confirmation. Its handy to keep just in case if issues down the line. Always worth making sure its marked as settled in your credit file too.

Definitely. I still have an ongoing dispute with Barclaycard about not updating my credit report correctly.

In fact this evening, I may have to summon the will to call the BC overseas call centre to hear 'sir, our records show your account is closed and we have informed the relevant agenecies' ad nauseum.
