Hi all
I'm hoping you guys could help us?
Today my mother recieved a letter telling her that she still owes money to a barclay card from over 15 years ago. My mum doesn't remember ever getting this card and while the company have said that they will treat it as a fraudery case for now, we are wondering if there is a time limit on the companies asking for the repayments? I ahve looked everywhere and cant find anything that states one way or the other!!!
She sent all her debts from 15 years ago to the citizens advice bureau and has heard nothing since.
I would be so grateful if anyone could help as this has obviously worried her alot.
Thank You
Jo

Hi, I wouldn't worry by law all debts after six years are state barred which means they have to be written off provided that over the last six years, she has not acknowldged the debt as hers or has paid anything towards it in the last six years, if the answer to both of these is no, then smile when you tell them its state barred because its over six years old.
I'd love to give a company the run around for six years, then on 6 years and 1 day phone them up and say "Actually it might of been mine, mwahhhh" still not admitting by saying it might he he lol,
Hope this helps0 -
I'm not an expert on this myself but if a debt hasn't been acknowledged for six years then it becomes 'statute barred' (if I've got the term right?).
It may be worth doing a search on this forum for the name of the debt company that has got in touch, or do a google search perhaps.
I did a quick search and found this thread (started today) about an 11 yr old debt from Barclays. It could maybe be the same debt agency who have contact you.

It's worth doing a few searches and spending some time on this site as you'll most likely come across someone else who's experienced the same. If you have any questions it's probably best to head over to the Debt-Free Wannabe section as it's that forum where these type of questions usually come up.0 -
I think it's statute-barred..

This will explain it better...
