Hi, we joined british gas a while ago. now we want to join utilities warehouse. But we can't swap over as BG say we are in a 12 month contract, although we have been with them for 21 months! They say because we didn't write to them within 90 days of the end of the 12month contract they extended the contract for another 2 years! ARE THEY ALLOWED TO DO THIS? They also said they were going to charge us £50 for a late payment but after complaining they said they would clear this (how nice).

Welcome to the forum.
Before you join UW I suggest you do a search on this forum and get some other opinions of the company; most of the many agents who sing its praises now declare themselves!!!
Are you on a business tariff?0 -
I cont find anywhere on BG tearms conditions that it will be a 12 months contract:-

I assume you are a business. They are the only ones with this type of contract.
If you're not, get them to switch you to domestic.
I don't know much about the business side of it - just what I've seen on here, but it does seem like you have to be much mor on the ball.0 -
Hi,
It does sounds like you are a business.
If you do not opt out by switching within X days of the end of a business contract or renew it with a new one on the latest rates, you then go onto "out of contract" rates which can be considerably higher.
Normally you are on a rolling basis with those (from what I thought???) and can opt for a cheaper renewal with them or switch. I didn't know you get locked in for X years on a rate you have not agreed.
I suggest you dig out your contract and check what it states as to how you are treated at the end of the term.
Their right to charge you out of contract rates and roll your contract is covered by the deemed contract terms. That doesn't state they can enforce X years though so it must be in your original contract somewhere.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0
