I've got a few .mov files from my camera and I want to edit them together. Windows movie maker won't read .mov files, so I can either convert them or find a free .mov editor. All the programs I've downloaded so far are free trials and either won't convert the whole file or add watermarks.
What's the cheapest way to do what I want? Conver to .avi etc or download a free .mov editor?

I generally convert to avi using a little program called mp4cam2avi:

I have no idea what formats are melded together in the .mov container format. You can try GSPOT to identify the codecs that are required to play the format.
I'm sure that if the details of the device that creates this material were known then others maybe able to offer more help.
I like to use cuttermaran to edit mpeg2 content.
www.videohelp.com is where I found it.0 -

I use Super for conversion as this give best flexibility;
To convert MOV to AVI use the settings below;
Output container - AVI
Output video codec - DV Digital Video
Audio - MP3
Scale 720:576
Aspect 5:4
2 channels
bitrate 96
Sampling freq 22050
Use MEncoder
29.97 FPS
This makes the file easier to work with using packages such as Pinnacle Studio. Using MP4CAM works OK but is a little more jerky & the colour can suffer a little0 -

.MOV files are Apple Quicktime Movie Files, unsurprisingly Microsoft don't invest time and money in supporting a competing format when they have an excellent .WMV (Windows Media Video) format of their own, or .AVI (Audio Video Interleave) which is a little more generic.
Apple similarly don't support WMV files. The joys of the free market, eh?0
