Ram

When buying RAM for my computer. Does it have to be the same as the RAM already in it. Where is the cheapest place to buy RAM.

Thanks

    Yes in general.

Try https://www.crucial.com/uk it's the best known site for checking what you need and is excellent

You can compare prices at a variety of sites from https://www.pricerunner.co.uk and https://www.froogle.co.uk but Crucial tends to be very well priced.

It would have to be the same type of ram but the speed & max size is up to the motherboard specification.

check here to see what you can do, they scan your system to chevk what you need

  • The Ram needs to be pretty much the same. You cant just buy any old RAm and put it into your pc and it will work

Take a look at Crucial as their memory checker will diagnose what is already in your PC and recommend best upgrades.

PC Wizard is free and an excellent tool listing all components etc.

Once you've determined the type (SDRam/DDR/DDR2/RDRam) you need, tell us:

    1. How much you presently have (Mb/Gb), & how much more are you thinking of getting?
    2. How many slots are free on the motherboard?
    3. Your OS (Win98/WinXP/Vista). If XP/Vista, is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
    4. Why do you think you require more RAM?

Then I'll try to find the cheapest for you. Crucial could very well be the cheapest (after Quidco), but you may be able to get the best deal off eBay. If there's only a few pounds in it, then stick with Crucial. G

P.S. Don't go looking on your own on eBay though, as there are some pitfalls - one of them

    PM from Verb...
Hi. The reason I'm looking at RAM is because my brother lives in a small flat and I'm trying to get his PC o run through his TV. I purchased a new graphics card (Zotac GeForce 6200A, 256MB DDR2 Memory) as someone on Money Saving Expert recommended. It is connected to the TV through the S-Video out with a Jack cable converter. Now the graphics arn't that good, but I have been told that the video quality should be better. But when ever I try to do any thing in terms of view an Avi movie (either from disc or pre saved to the hard drive) the computer just thinks about it then stops responding. It has windows XP with all the latest updates on, it has a 1.88 or 1.66 processor with 256 of RAM. I will have to check this out tomorrow. Someone in work said about getting more RAM to improve this.

The RAM upgrade may help (will almost certainly help overall system performance), but before that have you tried other video players like VLC Media Player.

For better results, the original video quality probably needs to be better, but connecting the PC to TV has mostly given me a very ordinary to bad picture - so I stopped doing it long ago. If he has a DVD-rewriter, it may be preferable to use a standalone DVD player (~£15-20 if he doesn't have one), video converting software (free as far as possible), transfer the videos to DVD & then watch them on the telly through the DVD player - this can be very tedious of course! G

P.S. Verb, please post in this thread rather than sending us PMs (unless applicable) - thanks :)
