London to Paris fundraising ride

Hi all,

I'd just like to put something to everybody.

I'm doing a sponsored bike challenge, which involves me riding from London to Paris (minus the sea!) in June this year. I am a 19 year old civil servant and thought it was about time I did something constructive and worthwhile in my life, so I signed up to this challenge.

The charity I have chosen for my sponsorship money to go to is SCOPE. A charity dedicated to helping cerebral palsy (CP) sufferers, aiming to raise the quality of life sufferers have. I chose this charity because my mum was a one-to-one carer for a little girl who has CP and I used to involve myself then and hlep out when I could, so it was an obvious choice for myself.

http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/Cyclis...-by.3434941.jp - thats a link to the media coverage I have received to prove I am being genuine. I was also in the Dronfield Advertiser and the Derbyshire Times but haven't got any links to those articles. I do have copies of the 2 other articles at home (Dronfield Advertiser and Derbyshire Times), which I will happily send anybody who would like them as proof that I am actually doing what I say I am, as I know there has been a bit of ‘ooo ahh’ about people keeping referrals etc, and I would hate my integrity to be questioned, but I know there are con-men out there so I appreciate the cautiousness of people.

My fundraising is going ok, done a couple of raffles, been round all friends and family, work colleagues etc but i would still like to raise significantly more to feel like it could make a difference.

I was wondering whether anybody who goes on this forum, or who does matched betting, or anybody who simply would like to help, would like to donate any sponsorship money to my bike ride.

Any help at all would be immensely appreciated.I have set up a PayPal account as I was looking into a justgiving account but I believe they charge for this service and PayPal is free. Although if there is a big enough demand, I will open a justgiving account.

Any more information please don't hesitate to PM me, or you can e-mail me at marc_gee@hotmail.co.uk.
Thank you in advance,
Marc Gee

have you thought about running a fundraising event - maybe like a race night or something? There are lots of ideas on these boards
for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.

Scope are already registered with JustGiving, so although there is a small admin charge when people give via them, it's probably a better way to go than through PayPal. IMO. AFAIK they don't charge you anything!

Especially as if the giver can tick the Gift Aid box, JustGiving will deal with all that on behalf of Scope.

See what Scope say, but I'd be surprised if they didn't say 'JustGiving'! It's easier for you as well, because the money goes straight from the donor to JustGiving to Scope, rather than through your PayPal a/c.

    Hi All

I do at least one fundraising event each year, last year I ran Marathon Des Sables in Morocco for Facing Africa. I used to use justgiving but was always unhappy that for every tenner that was donated about 98p was taken up in transaction charges.

Then I heard about a new website (from the thirdsector.com website http://www.thirdsector.co.uk/Channel.../login/772237/ ) that is launching in 2 weeks time called www.mycharitypage.com it's free for my charity to register and on a £10 donation + gift aid my charity will receive the full £12.82!! Fantastic.

If your doing a fundraising event soon or want to find out more you can register your interest as a charity or as a fundraiser on their holding page, there are also some screen shots. Can't wait to give it a go. www.mycharitypage.com
  • I just had a quick peek at that site and it sounds like it will be good once it is established.

I have gone down the "justgiving" route as I think you will still be charged fees by Paypal if someone wants to pay with a credit card? I am not sure? I guess JG is also good because they sort out the Gift Aid for you as well.

Good luck with your fundraising - I am trying to raise £3,250 and so far have um... £22 on my JG page, but, it's a start.

If everyone who even read why I am doing it etc donated just £1 it would make the biggest difference.
  • As everyone has said, Justgiving seems like the way to go. Although they take a percentage alot of people have heard of them so will donate that way, Ive used a justgiving page for my upcoming charity trek in aid of the NAS and have sponsors from people that may have not sponsored me otherwise. For all those I see regularly I pay the money in frequently directly to the NAS.
finally debt free and want to keep it that way!!
  • I asked about those things....they collect the gift aid and they charge the donors card 2.75% instead of the charity so if i wanted to donated £10 to you my card would be charged with about £10.27 which is better than the charity paying. So if you manage to raise your £3250 with just giving the charity will lose out on about £280 but with this new site they'll get the full £3250 + gift aid. :money:
