BT sales trying to get you back with them

Today, 17/01/08 I was contacted by a BT sales rep trying to get me to go back to them for calls.
As part of their sales pitch the guy on the other end stated to me that the TPS (telephone preference service) was owned by BT and that if calls were not through BT then the TPS would not work. He even told me what date I registered with the TPS and what date I left BT and that from that date the TPS would not work.
.
Obviously concerned I logged into the TPS website (www.tpsonline.org.uk) found a non 0845 number - 020 7291 3320 and enquired with them about this. The TPS guaranteed to me that they are NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH BT AND THIS INFORMATION FROM BT IS WRONG AND MISLEADING.
.
I have re-contacted BT (via 150) and complained. They stated they would send feedback to the sales team.
.
Also worth of note - if you have the 1571 service on your phone and your calls do not go through BT, you will be charged £1.00 per month! I've cancelled mine as I have an answer phone on my phone anyway.

are you sure they were from BT ? how would they know the date when you joined the TPS ?
  • Did you dial 1471 to retrieve the number of the company who called you? If you can retrieve it complain to TPS about the call.
  • Regarding 1571 charges...........in line with BT's other "free" services you have to make some chargeable calls with BT in order for them to be free. If you are on CPS then you simply need to make the relevant number of calls (6 per quarter) though BT using 1280. Please note that 0800 calls qualify as chargeable (the charge is zero).
  • Please note that 0800 calls qualify as chargeable (the charge is zero).

Not as far as I know they arent.

0800 numbers do not qualify as counting towards the calls you need to make to get 1571 and Caller Display free of charge
