Pot hole and puncture..grrr..

Options
I commute down a lane for about 1 mile, this lane is in good condition usually. I noticed when returning to work after Christmas there was a small pothole near the LH verge, not too big, could be avoided if there was no oncoming traffic, but if there WAS oncoming traffic there was no room to avoid it. Meant to phone the council to tell them but never got around to it.
After heavy rain these last few days, driving along yesterday morning, came to pot hole, MUCH bigger and couldnt avoid it. Drove over it with a big bang. 1 mile down the road - flat tyre. RAC changed wheel and I got a new tyre fitted £98.
I was thinking about claiming off the council - but suspect they require photos etc. and will take years to pay out - if at all. Just wondered if anyone had tried this?? Many thanks

Well if you intend to claim then go back asap and take photos with a ruler to show scale. Otherwise the Council will fill it in.

You called the RAC to change the wheel???

You can try taking it up with the council, but you'll perhaps have to lie about not knowing it was there, which might not be believable as huge pot holes don't just happen over night.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Yes I'm a mere weak girly and can't be doing with things like that, esp on a muddy grass verge on a dual carriageway .;) Thats what i pay the RAC for.

I'll have to remember that one! Did it myself last time (BMI of 17.5 - a mere weak girly too!!). Was feeling very proud of myself finding the jack, jacking the car up, taking the wheel off, then low and behold the bolt on the spare wheel had rusted and I had to call boyfriend to bring metal cutters to take it off as it was stuck! pah! Ok, so I ALMOST did it on my own...

One appeared on my route last night! I was driving along my usual road to work on a dark, wet morning and when there was an almight bang as my passenger-side front wheel dipped down low enough for my exhaust to hit the tarmac!

Luckily, I didn't suffer any damage, but it woke me up :p

(OK, "last night" might be an exaggeration - there are two possible routes to work and I tend to alternate, but it certainly wasn't there on Monday).

  • Hi, a couple of years ago now my mum ran over a pothole and damaged a tyre and had to have a new alloy wheel on what was a 2 month old car the bill totalled about £600, we took photos, reported the hole and the incident and wrote to our local council, with all our invoices,(call out charges, tyre fitting and supply and wheel), plus a report from the tyre place and BMW saying thaty the wheel and tyre were no longer safe and we got back our costs plus £100 for the bother within a couple of months, it was all dealt with by the councils insurance company Zurich v quickly.

    Good luck!!
  • To get compensation you need to show that the council knew about the hole and failed to fix it

As far as I can tell they didnt and you had ample time to report it

So first it was a 'lane' where there may or may not be oncoming traffic, and now its a dual carriageway?

If I were you I would put it down to experience, and remember to report things to the council when you notice them in future, instead of trying to increase everyone's council tax by blaming them for your mistake.

Not necessarily a problem with the post. By the time that the tyre deflated OP could quite easily have joined dual carriageway.

no the pothole was in a lane, my puncture occurred a mile down the road by which time i was on a dual carriageway.
