Economical car

Options
Ive just taken a new job which is going to mean a 74 mile commute so im going to have to get rid of my sporty 2 seater and get something a bit more suibtable.

im thinking initially it would be worth getting a diesel and thought about a mondeo tdci but ive read that the mpg's people actually get isnt that good.

so any suggestions for a decent sized diesel that does great mpg?

ill only have a few grand to play with

74 miles a day or 74 miles each way?

    74 miles = 20000 miles for work
    150 = 40000 miles

I would put both these figures in the "Get a Diesel or LPG" catagory.

    £2000? hhmmmmm

My 1st though when it comes to Diesels in this price range run the the Peugeot/Citroen family.

Something like a 406 2.0HDI (if the HDI can be bought in this price range) as you have stated a bigger family car.

The mileage stated by manufacturers is done in a lab and not real life so you will need to research what gives good real life figures. A good load of web searching will be required.

Vauxhall Corsa 1.7...........I think it may be a turbo diesel these days?

My wife had a 1998 Corsa 1.7 diesel, non-turbo, it used to pull like a petrol (small car, big engine) and she got between 53mpg and 62mpg.

BTW, the Ford 2.0 TDCi goes like a train, I've got one married to a six-speed box in my Focus CC and I get around 45mpg.

    .....sorry.....
i cant stand these things, mind you, destroying one didn't help.

go for a Pug 406 diesel, they can run forever and with the right one you can get 40-50mpg, just buy a parkers price guide and look the models up

i used to have a Rover 420Sdi. Not the worlds trndiest car but it had a very solid engine - 45mpg easily, was quicker than most modern diesels too. A few grand will probably buy you a late model ... with the better engine!!

Eh? God knows how they're driving it. I'm averaging 53MPG over the 3 months I've owned mine - a 130 TDCi.

I can recomend the Vauxhall 1.9CDTi engine. 150BHP look for the red Ti on the badge on the back. It goes like !!!! off a shovel, for the last 23000 miles I have done over the last year I have averaged 48MPG and I have a really heavy right foot. if I take it easy I can get 55-60mpg without trying.

Im looking for my dad at the moment he wants a small family car like a 307/8 or an Astra the Astra is pretty expensive for the diesel's but you can pick up a vectra for the same price which is really annoying as I could get him a decent deal on a vectra but he doesnt want such a big car.

What are you achieving on mpg with current car? A suitably light and low 2 seater should give good mpg if driven carefully.

Passat TDI with the 110 bhp engine in. Solid engine, good fuel economy - will get 60mpg keeping at 60-70mph - i've managed 67 mpg over 930 miles coming back from the south of France. The one weak thing on these cars are the front suspension...
