Gravy

Does anyone else save the leftover gravy/"juice" from a stew and freeze it for another meal, or am I going a step too far......?

I do....saves messing when I know there's not going to be any from what I've cooked, or I'm using pre-cooked meat that's leftover from something else.

Nope! Last week, I froze the water I had cooked some lovely dark greens in - I'm going to use it the next time I make soup/stew.

My late Mother said her mother used to make her drink the water that cabbage had been boiled in. Supposed to be good for the skin apparently  .

She hated it but she always had a good complexion, so perhaps is paid off....

It makes a great stock for soups, stews, casseroles...

    ..a step too far?

    Nah. No such thing :)

Another one saying no, too. Yesterday, I made a big steak casserole. We had it for tea, with spuds and veg. Last night, I used the veg cooking water as the base for a gallon of lentil-tomato-and bitsa (bits of whatever is quietly dying in the fridge!) soup, which is now in the freezer. I shall pad out the remaining casserole for tonight's meal and if there is any left over, that'll get blitzed for soup for lunch tomorrow.

I never throw away a chicken carcase that hasn't had the life simmered out of it for stock. I'll sometimes boil it up twice - first lot of stock is for me, the second lot to kid the dogs that they are getting a treat on their dried food.

It's definitely not a step too far - it's called waste not, want not so you just keep right on doing it!

Yes I do this too. If i've had a lovely roast and there is any gravy leftover I freeze it and use it to brighten up bangers and mash - makes it feel more 'homely' And as for the veggie water, that goes in as my breadmaking liquid... cant waste those lovely vitamins!

I have saved gravy from the last time we had roast. It tastes far better than the instant stuff, so why would I throw it away?

This is something that I've recently started doing! OH was about to pour some leftover gravy down the sink last week (he hadn't realised that I'd 'changed the rules' - lol) and he jumped out of his skin when I bellowed STOP!

I freeze and reuse also. Gives it a bit of added depth.

That reminded me of my childhood!
My late dad always used to drink the cabbage water out of a glass, with added black pepper.
I remember thinking how disgusting that was, but I must admit i had a sneaky little taste of the cabbage water last week and thought, "Mmmm, lovely" !

    I'm getting old! :rotfl:
