I had this happen with some metal candle holders I had in the bathroom. I treated them with anti rust stuff and then resprayed both them and all my metal towel holders/toothbrush holder and soap dish with car spray [primed them first] when I redid the bathroom last year. I think I may actually have improved their appearance [more by luck than design:D

I think you might have to call it a day on this one. If you've got lots of rust showing it means that the chrome(?) finish on it has gone.
If you really want to rescue it you need to go to somewhere like Halfords and find yourself some rust treatment which (usually) not only clears the rust but chemicall changes it to a protective layer.
Usually black! Eek!
So your next step would be to give it a good going over with steel wool and then paint it - either with car paint if you've got any kicking around (or from Halfords while you're there) or Hammerite paint.
So...
..in the bin then?
Or just treat it and use it in the shed (or garage, or attic) if you can find a use for it there.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I bought one of those 'chrome across the bath thingies' with extending ends on it. Was really p****d off when I noticed that the extending bits were rusting after about 2 weeks! OK so it wasn't THAT expensive - but oh so obviously not up to the job of being in a steamy, damp bathroom. That experience has totally put me off having anything chrome in the bathroom ever again. Washable, wipeable white plastic for me in future!0
