Front Door

Hi,
We have been quoted a variety of prices for our front door - from 875, 980 to 1300. What would people expect to pay to buy and fit a upvc front door (mahogany colour) with high security, handles, letterbox etc.
Cheers
Nick

I think you will find you are paying for the colour, for example white upvc doors are available in B&Q for £150 and on screw fix the start at £245.0

Yes thats a good point. Colour matching to existing windows is probably quite tricky and removes a lot of cheap suppliers. And also we specified we want e.g. break-secure locks on the door.0

we had a white PVC door with the bit over the top (victorian house) and it was £5750

My mother in law has just had a nice navy blue upvc door fitted. Blue on the outside while on the inside.
She had just paid £850 all in. Looks really nice.0 -
Around here (N.Notts) the going rate to have a white pvc door with some kind of detailed glazing fitted is about £650. I'm busy having quotes done at the moment.0

here in the NW you would expect about 500 quid for a white one.
apart from the big national DG ripoff merchants of course. they just make a number up.Get some gorm.0 -
We're just getting quotes for a new front door. Hoping to be able to get a hardwood door, but have just been quoted £2500 (!) for a proper hardwood, plus a glass sidelight.
Quotes for a uPVC door have come in around £800-1000. I'm currently assuming we'll end up paying £600-700
Are hardwood doors really that more expensive? We can't afford £2500 but if I can get it closer to £1000 we might be interested.

I'm afraid I don't know about hardwood doors - but here are some questions/information I found/asked when looking for uPVC doors:
1) Does it conform to PAS24
(See http://www.securedbydesign.com/standards/doorslocks.aspx and http://www.homesafedoors.co.uk/private/performance.html#PAS24%20-%20Enhanced%20Security%20Performance )
2) What sort of lock - hooks are better than rollers apparently? Is the lock break secure/snap safe/Laird cylinder clamp/etc? (See http://www.ciaalarms.co.uk/break_secure_cylinders.htm )
3) Does it include a insurance backed guarantee?
4) Does the quoted price include fitting and all extras (e.g. letterbox (!))
Hope that helps,

How much for a hardwood door???????? The lads in the workshop opposite mine charge £450= vat to make an Oak door! I've never ever paid more than about £650 for a solid hardwood door from anywhere, then I would charge a further £120 to fit it.
Just a quick warning about *cheap* upvc doors. I decided to fit a cheap one to my kitchen I paid £240 for it. It's crap.
I spend much of my week repairing locks on upvc doors and it has to have one of the worst tacky locking mechanisms I've ever come across, the panel is a fractionally different colour, and the frame is flimsey. No metal re-inforcing inside it or the door.
And I'm in the ruddy trade! LOL

Thanks Woody, that's pretty much what I thought - they're trying it on. I had a look in Wickes and they have decent doors for £400.
Even though we want a side light as well, I can't see the whole thing being more than £800-900 fitted.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
