Worcester Boiler

My mum recently moved. The new property has a Worcester 24CDi combi - boiler which we think was installed about 7 years ago. The boiler was serviced by British Gas before she moved in - paid for by the vendor. She cannot get hot water. Although we guess the diverter valve s probably stuck her former boiler service engineer has told her that Worcester boilers are extremely complicated and he would only recommend allowing Worcester themselves to repair it. When we called them they want an up front payment of nearly £200.

Questions - 1) Is a boiler this age worth repairing or should she bite the bullet and replace it. He has offered her a Baxi boiler, 5 year guarantee, fitted for £1300.

2) If it is worth repairing is it correct about Worcester only and is the high fee correct.

Many thanks

Good morning: An experienced CORGI would have no difficulty diagnosing the problem and repairing your boiler. Tell your mother to save her cash...no need to replace the Worcester (we have the same model in our home) especially with a Baxi (and the quote sounds on the low side for a competent installation of good condnesing combi)...was it a fully itemized, written quotation following Best Practice...see the Energy Saving Trust for more info on the installation and specification of gas central heating http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/uploads/documents/housingbuildings/ce30.pdf
I don't know where you are the UK...this will affect the callout charge and final cost for the repair.

  • We also have the same boiler. Generally speaking we are very pleased with it. It is surprisingly economical. We have a three bed detached house, with two relatively large ground floor extensions, including a 5m x 3m conservatory with a Victorian roof. The conservatory is open to the kitchen (which itself has no radiators) and has two double panel rads in it. Our gas bill for the last quarter was £121. And that was from a meter reading, so the bill is accurate. So I think you will be quite happy with it from that point of view, once this problem is sorted.

However, we have had a couple of problems. Twice we have needed a replacement printed circuit board. However we are covered by annual maintenance agreement with British Gas. I generally do not subscribe to these contracts, but at £11 per month, including an annual service, it gives me peace of mind. Personally I would recommend the same once the problem has been solved.

    Hope this helps.
