Gecom Files

I am registered with Ancestry.co.uk they say I can upload a tree using Gecom.

Can I convert my tree on Ancestry to a Gecom file?

And how do I open it on my computer?

"Can I convert my tree on Ancestry to a Gecom file"

Yes, look under the Help section in Ancestry on how to do it

It is a gedcom file BTW, just in case it was not a typo

You can open gedcom on your computer, however it will appear as reams of text, as they are text files

Gedcom are the means of transfering information from one family history programme to another

"GEDCOM, an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication, is a specification for exchanging genealogical data between different genealogy software. GEDCOM was developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as an aid to genealogical research."

Once exported as gedcom you will need to import it into another programme of your choice to make much sense of it, like the one Sooler posted

Depends on what software you are using, most allow import and export of gedcom files.
